Oh, there's a very, very hard-to-find book that was up on ebay and since the copy I have is about perfect I'm always nervous about flipping through it so I sniped the one on ebay out from under these guys. I always feel guilty bidding at the last second like that, but boy if you've ever been "nudged up" by some cretin when you bid too early you'll prefer the guilt :)

The book, by the way, is The Bottle Book by Richard Fike (1986), which is an amazing piece of work (he is an archaelogist) and is almost impossible to get. The two available that I can find on the internet are $249 and $1032, and both are in bad condition. $125 was as high as I was willing to go for a reading copy, so Flaschenjager almost got me

Cretin, I resemble that remark. Don't feel guilty, its happened to everyone who buys off Ebay and we all want to get our hands on the person who beat us out. Then we turn around and do it to some unsuspecting bidder who thought they should get it because they bid first.

If you want to be great at Ebaying go out and try to live off the land like our ancesters did for 30 days. Then some 30 or 40 pounds later come on back and you will be a great Ebayer because what you will learn is that there no recliners, soft beds and full refridgeators growing in the woods and the wild life wont drop dead and cooked for you and you love snatching things out from under someone at the last second just like the rest of us.

I don't care what anyone calls me, If it on Ebay and I want it, 'All is Fair'.

Don't feel guilty Sean, There is another conquest right around the corner and if I want it bad enough I'll get it.

I sniped a milk bottle on ebay and after the auction ended I got a very nasty email from the guy I outbid. I couldn't believe some of the words he used. So me being me I just had to send one back that was 10 times worse. Also has anyone heard of sniping software? I heard someone mention it but I had no idea what they were talking about.

This is a post that strikes a funny chord with me. When I first started ebaying, I got sniped in the last 20 seconds on a pocket knife I really wanted. This was before the snipeing software you can buy today was out. I emailed the guy and let him have it both barrels saying " YOU SOB! Put your high bid in in the last 2 minutes, not the last 20 seconds!!!!" Blah, Blah , Blah. Give me a chance! Blah, Blah, Blah. Made him feel terrible. He said he would let me have it, if it meant so much to me, for his high bid. I said NO! I learned a valuable lesson...... and I did. Bid what you are willing to pay! If a snipper gets it, he wanted it more than you did. Since then I have won 3 auctions that I can think of doing the same thing. If I want it bad enough, I'll put in a $5000.00 bid in the last 5 seconds. If Idon't, the Snipe can have it. He wanted it more than me. Don't feel bad. Kelley

PS. If I know the person I am bidding against....... I might consider my options for a second or two!

PSS. Yes Bryan, you can buy snipeing software and it's good for the last 3-5 seconds I believe.

I have had some people win my auctions by using a website. i normaly bid the first bid and watch it then bid at end if im paying attention. i used to run 2 browser windows. one i would reload while the other had my highest bid waiting to last second to push that button to send it to ebay.
This is the site i have seen peopel snipe my auctions with http://esnipe.com/

What? Am I the only person who knows the world is out to get us? Snipers don't want the item, they just don't want US to have it.
Oh-oh, where's my therapist number. I think my paranoia is showing.
Seriously though, if you really want it just figure what you want to pay. If it's a $10 for the fist 6 days bid $100 if you really want it. Chances are it won't get that high and if it does get sniped you have the satisfaction of knowing they paid to much.
Yep, I think I got issues. Oh, here's the number.

I don't use websites, I use flasherr's two-window method and try for the last 3 seconds. On good items there are always a few people doing the same thing so even if you lose it's fun to look at the bidding stats after the end.

I've gotten things at the last second, but I've also lost them by being too close to the edge. I'm still haunted by the memory of a quart strapside flask embossed "Old Tom Gin" with a cat underneath the words that went for $41.00 when my $110 bid was too late! Like Warren said though: all's fair!

I will never again place my highest bid early though, way too many times I've had people place bid after bid in the last few minutes while I watched and cursed! I swear there are people who do that just to drive up the prices of things.

If they didn't want it, how would they know when to stop bidding so they wouldn't get stuck with it...?

Be very careful about bidding the first time then coming back and uping your bid to early. If the item shows 2 bids at the starting price you leave yourself wide open. It is very easy for the owner to come in and bump you up. if i fear im getting run up i look at the past history of seller and buyer. true sometimes they are repeat buyers but you can also find a pattern there to
Just my input. good luck on all your bids
Brian

I always use esnipe if I really want an ebay item. And I very seldom place a bid on the item before the snipe. But , I wouldn't ever put a snipe in for more than what I was willing to pay. As you might win it for more than what you were willing to give!
I always place a snipe ..... because of several reasons. I have never had esnipe miss placing a bid for me , I can't be run up by shill bidding , and some people believe if you are bidding on an item it must be a good one , and you can bid on an item and go about your business and not be tied up on the computer !!!
I have won many and lost many auctions using esnipe. And I have made a few pay more than they wanted to..... by them placing a huge amount on their snipe so they were sure they would get the item. But I never snipe for more than what I'm willing to pay for the item.

I was against esnipe at first..... but after losing many items by not bidding enough , being run up , and being sniped myself . I decide to join the crowd .

I never snipe; I usually bid with 5 minutes or so left, and I usually have good results.

Sean and all-

quote:

$125 was as high as I was willing to go for a reading copy, so Flaschenjager almost got me

I WAS MAD at the end of this auction, but not at the bidders and after reading the above quote, got a little more angry. You see, I am angry at myself. I should have placed my original bid of $125.00+, but instead went with some goofy and low number. I was telling someone recently that I keep 'emergency' money set aside for items like this. Well, that plan will backfire if you don't spend it, right?

Sean, I am sure that I've outbid you (and other forum members) before on some books/items and you (they) have outbid me. It'll happen again, as long as we continue in this hobby (I'm just gettin' started in bottles...). We all have the same interests. Meaning, we will cross from time to time. No big deal, on this end.

A positive thought: Maybe I won't have to bid against you on the next Fike's book.

Another: I think you got a GREAT deal...CONGRATS!!!

You have a deal, my ebay fund is about depleted now anyway

Speaking of good books, I highly recommend this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6244052482

It's titled Pike's Peak Gold by John M. Eatwell and David K. Clint III (2000) and it's really well done. A whole lot of historical information about Zebulon Pike and the "59-er" gold rush that inspired the Pike's Peak flasks.

It's a quality production that was limited to a printing of 1000 copies. The seller is John Eatwell's son, and his father passed on a month or so ago so he is liquidating the remaining copies at very reasonable buy-it-now prices. I have no connection to the guy, I just bought copies of the 2 versions, and I'm impressed enough with the books that I thought I'd pass it on. I don't even know if he has any more, but I'm guessing he does. I'm also guessing that in ten years these will be going for way more than they are now...

Don't know what he was using, but I got to see it in action today. Some guy came out of nowhere with less than thirty seconds to go and squashed all the other bidders.
