Dr. William Wesley Trout received his early education in the public schools of his native place and then entered the Carlisle High School, from which he was subsequently graduated with the class of 1872. Having in the meantime determined to enter the drug business, and with this end in view, he entered the employ of Henry Blair & Sons Company, and later matriculated at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, completing the prescribed course in 1876, when he secured a position with Charles W. Hancock, remaining there until 1878. The summer of this year he came to Spring Lake and opened a drug store for George I. McKelvey, but in the winters of 1879 and 1880 he returned to Philadelphia and again employed by George I. McKelvey. In 1881 he bought out Mr. McKelvey's store in Spring Lake, and formed a partnership with Charles A. Bye, of Spring.Lake, and the business continued thus until 1888, when Dr. Trout sold out his interests. In the meantime, however, Dr. Trout had decided to engage in the practice of medicine and therefore entered Jefferson Medical College, graduating with the degree of Doctor of Medicine in the class of 1886. After com

He and his wife stayed at a casino there in 1903 but I don't know if he still had the business.
Not much but a start.

Thanks for your efforts Eric. I aprecciate it.

I take it that Spring Lake beach was and still is a resort area. I saw it referred to as the "New Jersey Riviera" on one site. It has a population of about 3,500 now so it must have been a pretty small town before the turn of the century. I'm hoping it's a scarce druggist for my collection.

Hello Zane,
According to the US Federal Census Charles Bye was born in Pennsylvania in 1859 and is listed in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census as a "druggist" in Lakewood, Ocean, NJ.  In the 1930 census he was located in Spring Lake Beach and was also listed as a "druggist."
I do love searching the census'!
Regards,
