Hello all - I was sent here by those on the Ebay Glass and Pottery board. If I am asking a question in the wrong venue, forgive me, direct me.
If there is a stoneware expert among you, I am seeking for information about this stoneware jug. I thought it had an impressed "G" - others have disagreed. It appears to have glaze drips and flaws - so I have been told.
My collection offers no room for a piece this large ( I am reduced to window sills and mouldings).
I will be selling this - probably Ebay - but I have no idea of what ballpark I'm playing in.

I dont see the G.
It looks like a pretty typical stoneware jug.
Put it on ebay and see what you get.

Hello Windingroads:

Welcome to the forum, stick around after the jug if ya can. I have a jug similar to yours. Good luck on ebay. Mine has no embossing and the bottom looks like it rested on cheese cloth after being made. Is yours similar? ?

Good luck,

Madpaddla

Hey John, Looks kind of like a syrup jug to me and most jugs have glaze drips and flaws. Down in southern Alabama and NW Florida they bring about $25. They used to bring alot more but that fad is gone now.

I am sorry about the large pictures and thank you , I will come back.
This is a wonderful sight that I will definitely recommend.
I was just wondering a few things...
When I list this jug, I want to be honest. Is it 19th or 20th century? Is it Ovoid? Is it salt-glazed?
If anyone has any advice - that would be very much appreciated.

Hey Ben, Your jug will clean up real well in some muratic acid. Soak it till clean and then soak it in water and rinse well.

It will look great.

Most of the jugs like that were used for syrup or molasses in my area. Shoulder jugs were more often used for whiskey or rum.

Hey Ben...

The series of rings on the base of your jug is often referred to as a "Thumb" print or "Finger" print because it looks like the one on your finger or thumb. That indicates that yours is probably a bit older. A different method of removing the piece from the potters wheel.

Niether one is Ovoid. They appera to be late 1800's 1870's to 1890's and Cap is right, they usually go for 20 to 25 dollars for the plain ones. When you have some identifiable embossing they go up a little in value and if you have some blue glazing and decorations they go real high.

If they have painted birds, animals, eagles... they go sky high in value. You'll see a lot at the bottle show. We'll hook up... There is a stoneware dealer that will be there, I think his name is Dave Grassi and he has written a couple books on stoneware items.

Wayne

Ovoid jugs are the earlier ones.

I got one out of an old barn 30+ years ago. I had to use a coat hanger to get all the dead mice out.

ERIC...your jug looks like those made in NY & Mass. circa 1850-1860.

WINDING...I thinik I see an impressed "G" down on the heel of your jug but no idea whos mark it may be. Your jug dates around the 1880's.

MAD...the "thumbprint" :
The jug had to be cut off the potter's wheel with a piece of wire after it had been thrown. If the wire was pulled between the base of the jug and the wheel it left a smooth path.
If the wire was twisted and pulled through, it left a trail of transverse grooves in the bottom of the piece.
Oval grooves resembling a fingerprint remain if a loop shaped wire was used.
