I thought everyone might enjoy some pics of my recently restored decorated stoneware bank. I dug this one over the summer from a deep 1850s brick lined privy in Baltimore. Though banks are not a rare find, decorated stoneware ones are quite rare. I have only dug two of them, both smashed. However I was able to recover about 98 percent of this one. So I deemed it worth wile for professional restoration. The other I only had a few shards of just enough to know what it was. The other two banks are a typical size plain stoneware bank and a small redware bank both from the 1850s also. The small stoneware one is a two piece glue back and the redware one is completely intact.

Killer piece, Chris. I love the odd stoneware items like banks, bird houses and water coolers.

I have a nice 3-gallon handled crock that I am working on now. It's unmarked, but has a lot of cobalt decoration. It's all there but a piece of the base and part of the one handle. ~Jim

Very nice - just imagine the cool pennies that would have been in those.

Great item and great save, Chris. Not many would go through the trouble of keeping the broken pieces and the expense of having it professionally restored. Very commendable. Great job.

Here is where I am at with it now. Since this one is not marked other than a "3", I am going to do my best at restoring it myself. I do have a very rare marked crock, but the entire base and back are missing. I know that it could still be restored, but I'm concerned that it might be prohibitively expensive since there is so much missing. It has the full, strong mark and 90%+ of the original cobalt decoration, so at least it has that much going for it.

Send me a PM or e-mail with the restorer's info whenever you get time. I would love to have that one restored, but it may be a while before I could get it done. Thanks. ~Jim
