found this today sticking out of the creek bank. Just wondering if anyone could tell me the age of the bottle. It is 12 sided and is 10" tall. No markings are on the bottle.

Thanks

It looks pretty early to me,...but I'm no expert on stoneware bottles. Cider or Ale perhaps....... You might want to go back and dig around that spot.....there may be more bottles there.             Joe

I had found some early glass bottle shards and some crock pieces downstream and was walking upstream to try and find the source. This bottle was all alone and I dug a bit around it but did not find anything else. I am going to continue upstream tomorrow and see what turns up. I have been digging a 1920's dump about a half mile upstream but have not found anything as old as the shards I have found in this area.

It's a Merrill Pottery bottle from Akron, Ohio. Most of them date from the 1860s and 1870s.

rwehle99,

Nice bottle.  Probably a sarsaparilla or maybe a root beer.  I agree it is likely from Ohio, where a lot of them were made up until about 1875 or so.  Smaller quantities were also made in NY city around the same time.  There are different types of molds with more or less mold lines that help narrow down the age.  Unfortunately the bottles with no stamp/debossing only sell for around 20 dollars or so.  If you could go back and find one that is stamped and/or has cobalt decoration the value goes way up.  Last time I found a broken stoneware like that it led me to a pontiled ink, so you should go back there and dig like crazy.  Good luck.  stonebottle
