I've been digging bottles most of my life, metal detecting half of it, and am game for just about any way imaginable to chase these ghosts of the past that we all seem to constantly be in pursuit of. I'm recently divorced......again. One of the points of contention was an early 1800's storage jar, according to Bobby Gaither was either a Seagle or Singleton piece, that the ex ended up with. It was shorter, more bulbous, wasn't as decorative, and differently applied handles but the clay, color, and style were identical to the piece pictured below. Not too long ago, a lady friend of mine owns an antique shop and I helped her move some massive furniture to a doctor's house. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this piece in his sunroom, inquired about it, he'd picked it up at a yard sale years ago, and I told him how closely it resembled "the piece that got away" from me. A few days later, 'Chelle called me and said that she had a surprise for me and when I got to her shop, she presented me with this piece as a gift from the doc. I'm still in shock! After having looked it over for a few days now, I'm beginning to wonder if this is a somewhat later repro, by maybe an apprentice or maybe someone created this piece as a compliment to the form and style of the earlier one. It's the same, but it's gawdy in comparison to the other one, and the wear on the bottom isn't near as pronounced. I'm no expert on anything other than bs'ing and was hoping one of you fine people who IS an expert could tell me more about this. Regardless, I'm still ecstatic as it is quite an attention grabber and it just goes to show ya' that there's still some random kindness left in the world. I appreciate any input.
