ORIGINAL: walkingstick http://www.antiquebottles.com/repro/ Heh, yup! In fact I believe O'Dell's book is where I had originally seen this in print. The guy's pissed at me now, but oh well. Here's a copy of part of our conversation, am I being an asshole??: On Fri, 24 Feb 2006 xxxxxxx@xxxxxxxxx wrote: > you did everything to say i was a thief, i know when i purchased the > item, do you?i hope you treat everyone like this, i am honest and tell > onlt what i know, i have intergrity and YOU emailed my clients rather > than let me do so. I'm sorry you feel that way, but I did what I felt I needed to do. I didn't email the bidders until after after I emailed you and the auction remained up. To me that meant that you had bad intentions. As soon as you saw that I was right you should have canceled the auction and relisted it in the proper category. If you don't believe that I'm right, then I don't know what to tell you except to do a google search on "AMERICA'S Suffolk Bitters Life Preserver". A clear explanation of what I'm telling you (by a highly respected expert on bottles) is the first thing on the list. I'm sorry if you think I mistreated you, but I think I gave you a chance; this auction shouldn't have been allowed to continue to the end. The final bid was ten times the value of the bottle. As a bottle collector, I don't want to see the hobby ruined by things like this. Again, I really don't think you were intentionally trying to rip people off, or that you were lying; what you said about when it was purchased fits perfectly with its age: it was made in the 1960s along with tens of thousands of others. Finally, even if I didn't email the bidders someone else probably would have. One of the good things about ebay is that the community works to protect against fraud, either accidental (as in your case) or intentional (as in WAY too many other cases). Again I'm sorry you don't like how I handled this, in hindsight I guess I should have been more clear about the fact that I thought the auction should be canceled. I guess I just thought that was the obvious conclusion. Sean
