Swedish Oil Dump Dig - 6/26/2011 6:58:55 PM    RedGinger Posts: 6727 Joined: 12/7/2007 Status: offline Well, we had a rigorous hike and a cool day.  I will start this post as Joe uploads the photos.  We tried to get you some vids, Swiz, but there was a camera malfunction.  Unfortunately, Alexander Skarsgard did not show up on this dig  But, we think it might have been a 19th century work site for some other Swedes.  I got lucky, and not so lucky today.  I won ten dollars on a $1 scratch off ticket.  Then, I found a tiny bottle and horseshoe where we were digging.  On the downside, I got a nasty cut from a beaver-gnawed stump I didn't see as I was walking.  It still has some splinters in it, but Joe has some Indian salve for that.  Then, we got home and a tick had decided that it was Alexander Skarsgard (a vampire character on a TV Show) and took a bite out of my, er, decolletage.  Okay, take it away Joe. < Message edited by RedGinger -- 6/26/2011 7:01:04 PM > _____________________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyVTdY2BI3g Post #: 1

Good as name as any! I was thinking "the toxic trail" dump.....Although this place was dead in the middle of nowhere,...I think the D.E.P. has some work to do in the area..Whatever was on or near this site made some strange substance...Or this stuff we happened on was an odd by-product... I suspect it was an old wood alcohol plant from around the turn of the century...The strange part is that 100 feet either way on our hike thru the woods and we'd have missed this odd rock hard (on top) tarry substance,...two feet thick in areas. In some places it had t.o.c. bottles embedded in it, that could not be budged! Where this stuff was, there was a super strong burnt chemical odor. In other areas the creek ran right through the middle of it. This was all noticed as we hiked into this spot, and didn't seem to be part of the settlement where we dug, but may have been associated with it. We also found some odd brick ruins. Here's a few pics. This is Mr. Fred's latest bottle buggy,...LoL, the road we took to this spot was very primitive and Fred almost turned around a couple of times, but the map and a few of my earlier recollections of the place kept him moving....we came out on this improved dirt road and things got suddenly better. (Near scenic Lake Perfidy) Status: offline We searched around this area and found shards and bottle parts in the creek,...really cool crock pieces with bumblebee cobalt slip glaze decorations, etc,...but not too much concentration of glass...Laur and Fred started digging under a big old tree on the bank that had barbed wire growing into it, and we found a dump of sorts...graniteware, glass pitchers, shot glasses and a lot of broken whiskies...
