Here's a Scrafito Brick marked "Aquilla". My Buddy saved it from an early "bake oven" He dismantled and reassembled. he gave me one of them also but I can't seem to find it.

"Scrafito" is a term often associated with incised stoneware. it's when they wrote the info with a pointed stick while the clay was still wet. That's the way I've seen the term used over the years.
I believe "Aquilla" was the brickmaker. The later "Talking Bricks" were usually embossed or debossed with the makers names. There are also bricks with "Touch-Marks"( symbols denoting who made them ) on them and numbered bricks which I believe were to denote what batch they were made in.
The "Aquilla" is from around 1820 or so and the one I'm posting now is debossed and from around 1855 or so.

Thanks Marge,
I've been into the old stuff my whole life, thanks to my parents. My dad has been dealing in antiques since 1964 or so. When are we going to see some more great finds from you?

Sgraffito means 'to scratch'.  It's used in ceramics (all clay products) to scratch thru the surface, glaze or an outer layer, to expose a different color underneath.  I didn't realize that the same technique would apply to bricks.

It appeared to be a better term than debossed to use in this situation.
