I have been on a dump a few times and found many broken blob tops. I wonder if someone can set me straight on a question I have. That is, how late were these tops used 1900? 1910? later? Ive found a few intact bottles from this dump with patent dates at 1891 and the latest a base that was 1919. Ive found so many of these tops broken it drives me nuts. Thanks for any info.

Blobs probably would have all but ended by 1910. They can go back a few years as well. Without a pic to go by its hard to say what you're into. My guess is late 1800's and maybe a little older. Is it just the tops that are broken off? That was a common practice from competing soda companies to bust the bottles of their competitors. Buying bottles was a bit more expensive then re-using ones that were thrown away. Swiz

WW yes these tops are very much just like those, many that same color and I found some that appear beer bottle coloration. Also many of the Dr Goldens, many pharm slicks, and other med bottles Kemps, Dr Thompsons etc.
Swiz, not sure if it was you but someone mentioned freezing and thawing could cause these to break. Its possible because this is at the bottom of a creek bed. I usually find bullets, or casings near by if the yahoos have been out plinking the bottles. Thus far, neither here has been found/observed.
I know we hunted this area extensively in the 70s and 80s for squirrels bagging out with a 5 limit was done in under 30 mins! Ive seen some of our old hulls (I used an old 16ga and was the only one around with one and some 20ga a buddy used as did my brother) we never knew the dump was there. I picked up the old hulls and tossed them (Eco-friendly-----BAH!) away.

I'm just one of many that have mentioned the freeze and thaw. If the entire bottle is busted then the F&T theory is most likely if its just the tops then its most likely from bottling company rivalries. Being down by the creek I'd have to say that you're right its the F&T. Don't count out roots and slingshots as well as kids just chucking them as well as target practice. A bottles life isn't easy. I collect blob top beers & sodas. I have dug quite a few over the years. My take on them is that they were made up until 1915-1920. After 1920 they were almost all ABM and of the crown top variety. They even made a few ABM (automatic bottle machine) blobs. Hope this helps.

Thank all. I want to head back and see if I can pull a few more good ones from this area. Like many of you, I sit and wonder gee if all of these were whole Id have a mini goldmine. Then back to reality as I hoist 3-4 more broken blobs out, or the millionth Goldens bottle shards.
Swiz also it seems that the bottles are down 12-18 inches and Ive yet to find any deeper yet. Im working up and down the creek. It looks like the dumping area extends 50 yards up and down this section of creek only. Probing beyond has shown nothing as yet. I think it should dry out good by Sunday (85-90 degrees) so with my bug repellant and tools I hope to go at it again. There have also been a few broken crocks and some broken china.

The blob type closures were used quite late. There are several Blob type beers from Wilmington Delaware that date to the late 1920s weather these actually contained beer or some non alcoholic beverage is the real question.

Even if the crocks are all broken you might still be able to get a few decent glue togethers. I'm gonna ask my repair guy if he can use parts of other crocks to put together crocks that are missing large pieces like a blown out base or missing back. Good luck. Swiz

You know I was just thinking about that last night. the last time there I did find large pieces of one and set them in a pile. I know where I dug the pieces from and maybe can do a bit of reconstruction out there and see if I can put it together,
My first dump I found only one cobalt that was maybe 4 inches tall said 2 OZ on it and in my haste I snapped it in two. I cleaned it and superglued it and it looks ok. Thanks for the idea.
Thaks BB for your info also.
Good to know there are many here to help the newer folks!

We like the new guys, because we were all the new guy at one time so we all understand. I can remember bringing home the faded and washed off ACL's and plain 1960's beers and the pluto waters with the cool little embossed devil on the bottom. Its that first Good bottle that gets you. The one you don't forget. Mine was a $300 rare straight sided coke bottle. Gems like that are out there and they get dug every year. its just a question of who's gonna get lucky. Keep at it and someday in the near future you'll snag a super gem like that. Good Luck, new guy!! Swiz

By no means worth more than 5 dollars probably...buy I'll never forget the shaky hands and the excitement of getting her out in one piece!!! Oh to find another spot like that!!! I feel one tho in my bones I just know I'm going to find a new dump this weekend!!!

I actually am running into this very problem in my new dump. I've dug 15 to 20 local sodas and everyone has the top busted off. Including one with a cool eagle embossed on the front. There's gotta be some whole ones in there somewhere. Swiz
