Was going to do some privy digging Sunday, but no one else was availible, so decided to scout future dig sites instead. Came across this crusty old thing, sort of overgrown but the privy ought to be findable. When I came around the other side, noticed the door was gone, couldn't resist a quick search for stray bottles that might lurk inside...

Is it me or is the room melting? Hard to believe this was occupied as recently as 2003, according to a calander still hanging on the wall...

Yup, there's your problem - those 'all weather' skylights just don't work...alas, nothing it the attic but fallen plaster and bat turds, neither of which is very collectable...

So, on to the basement, which showed signs of frequent flooding but was fortunately relativly dry at the moment. Yes! There's a crawl space! I see rusty cans...

Looks like you could spend all day in that crawl space...just poking around.  Any idea on the age of the house?

Alas, the crawl space was so tight and muddy that I didn't want to risk taking the camera in with me, so no good action shots from there, but I could see some stuff that looked like strap flasks mixed in with the cans. Found a junky Rumford baking powder, then got to the flasks, which were indeed cheesy straps, then a cute little embossed pharmacy and a big amber turm mold whiskey. Everything was just lying on the surface, not much depth to the dirt. I had just about resigned myself to finding nothing of interest when I poked another rusty can out of the way and spotted a hutch behind it. It turned out to be a very rare local guy, Thomas Harkins from Salem, in good condition. Only takes one good bottle to turn things around!

Finally got to a point where there just wasn't enough room to go any further and had to back out with the finds, scaring up a Piso's Cure along the way as a bonus. forgot to bring out the whiskey and the Rumford, didn't feel like going back in after them, so they got left behind(you can just barely see the whiskey behind the can in the last photo)...

Basement steps are a bit tipsy from repeated flooding rotting the bottom off - walking down them sort of makes you feel like you just polished off a 12 pack.
Wait a minute, what's that back under the steps?

Oh, it's just a sump hole. Except...am I crazy or is that sumphole a redware crock sunk in the floor?

I'm not crazy, that's a crock! Alas, it looks cracked; still gotta dig it out, though.

Definately a crock, and definately cracked. Still, an easy glueback. That 'possible privy' in the floor I showed before was directly opposite where this was, and if you go back and look at the pic you can see a couple redware crock shards - they sunk another one in the floor over there that collapsed. Mystery solved, no indoor privy, alas(but I bet you could dig all the pieces of a redware crock just like this one there!).

Even though the house is collapsing and has long since been stripped of everything of value by the scrap guys, the outside is relatively unvandalized. Judging from the fireplaces and mortice and tenon beam construction, the house probably dates to the 1840's or 50's, with most of the old wavy glass windows still intact. Gotta wonder if there is anything older in the part of the crawlspace I couldn't get to....the floor above that section is pretty mooshy already, I think if I go back in a few months I'll just be able to dig right through the floor, if the second floor hasn't fallen in by then...

Well, all told, I was only there for an hour, so it was a quick dig. And thanks to the hutch, a successful one as well - got a bottle for the collection!
Everything after cleaning...

Cool. Thanks for taking us along. I always love hutches but the pharmacy is really neat too. Good luck on future excursions.
