Hello All:

I found these yesterday while digging (enjoying the warm winter in Mass). They appear to be made of ceramic. I also found some screws and washers made of the same material. Most have flea bites (little pucking) There is an old factory near by. The factory was in operation pre 1900's. They are solid, heavy in weight, and simply put the largest nuts I have ever seen. Any idea on their purpose, era, value, or should I keep digging and look for the machine that used such huge parts hahah.

Hey Ben, Those are conveyor rod ends or spendle ends. They went on the end of a metal or wooden rod used for hanging paper, cloth, leather ect. for dyeing, drying, dipping, and curing or treating with chemicals. Ceramic ends were used because they were cheep, durable, heat resistant, and stood up to liquids well. You may also find othe factory items where you found them. Ceramic parts are still used in all types of manufactoring today.

Unfortunetly No, at least not to my knowledge. That would be kinda like collecting lug nuts. I guess they would make a good conversation piece.

If your married dont take them in the house. That kind of stuff gets me in trouble.

Capsoda:

I continue to tell my g/f of my digs etc. And she was here after I made the first post about the nuts. While playin a game of literati, we noticed that someone had responded. As we looked she shreeked to high heaven:

"See I told ya. Get it out of the house."

And to think, those nuts could of sat around this house for years. The local dump will have em now unless someone is interested.

My g/f thanks Capsoda.
