I always keep an eye out for cheap wicker covered demijohns. Like Gump said , you never know what you will get.
Here is a recent one for $9 ... its a dark blue green aqua, not quite teal...

I love wicker surprises... be cautious though as there can be hidden damage...

Make sure it's real wicker with age. Don't bother with the rush weave for the most part. You don't want a ciati from the 1970's. Tough call sometimes to newcomers.

Was what spun?
Mine is a two part mold blown.

Yours looks like it might have a sand pontil. Sand and glass chip pontil marks are pretty common on large demijohns. Its a bit hard to tell from the photo till its cleaned up some.

Yes you see a lot of more modern ones that held Porto Rican rum and other such imports. You can normally tell the older ones by the applied lips.

So far I have only had one out of about 25 with damage under the wicker. It worked pretty well as protection.

I was inquiring about the cleaning process.....was it spun in a bottle spinner?  Or just hand cleaned?
Mine has glue on it but it comes off just a bit a elbow grease.
Sand pontil?
thx

LOVE THE WHITTLE! I bought one a few years ago and was torn to take the wicker off,but the top was a beautiful blue green. I took the wicker off and it was a gorgeous blue green gallon demijohn with a deep sharp pontil!LOTS OF WHITTLE AND LOTS OF BUBBLES!

Sand pontil?

No, it wasnt tumbled. Just washed with soap and water. The nice thing about wicker bottles is they were never buried so they almost allways clean up easy.

sand pontil has a rough sandpaper like residue as opposed to an iron oxide residue (usually reddish or dark grey). Crushed up glass chips were also used as a release agent.

Hey all - Nice thread.

Here's one I just picked up on the way back from our beach week, before the fourth. It was covered in pretty decent, but nasty dirty wicker with one handle. I cut it off and exposed this demi, polluted with tons of bubbles. The picture shows some, but this bottle is stunning in person. The top looked emerald when I bought it and couldn't tell if it had a scarred base, but it does.

Not a bad demi - I told the cashier that I didn't want the catails and reeds that were coming out of it.

   The sharply scarred base.
