Hi!

Just remembered I do have photos of a rather large bottle I picked up at a garage sale. I’ve looked everywhere, books, websites etc. and can’t find anything like this piece. The seller said she had bought it years ago at a flea market. It’s 2 ft. tall and weighs 13.5 lbs. I’m sending jpg’s of the bottom, top and full length view. I know it’s blown glass as it’s full of bubbles. Any more info? Even if it’s not worth anything, it’s sure nice to look at! First the full view. (I tried to composite these, till I figure it out, have to use a few more posts.) After this I have to hit the sack!

and finally the lip. There is a seam in it, although that's not twisted!

OK...Anyone have a clue? How old, who made it? I've had it a couple years.
Thanks! CSJ

Hi CSJ, I think you have posted the oddest bottle this forum has ever seen Well, at least since I've been here anyway. Although you posted some great pics, it's still a little difficult to determine a few things, 1. is the bottom flat, or concave?, 2. You say there's a seam, but does it go up through the lip? I'm inclined to speculate this might be a fantacy bottle by a contemporary artist, but that's a guess on my part. My father was involved in some urban renewal/demolition back in the 60s in Poughkeepsie, and he brought home some great bottles. I'll post a picture of one of them that's particularly crude at a later date. I have to find the picture on my disks, but like you, I have to hit the sack too! ( Hey I'm a poet and don't even know it)

Oh, by the way, were you aware that you're writing in BOLD? My nephew says you're shouting at us!.

To Maine Digger:

I chose Arial at font size three. Does it look bold? Sorry! I'll leave it tiny!

The bottom is flat, the glass is very thick, too. Yes, looks old to me, too. There is a seam but the lip appears to be applied last as the two seams don't match. There are no ID marks of any kind. I would think an artist would want to sign it in some way, so was wondering if it was some glass blowers "fun piece". You know, like a test piece!

VT Spring: any idea where I might post this for the artsy type to see if they recognize this?OK, I'm off to work.

Hi CSJ, no apology was necessary, I just thought you might not be aware how your messages were being posted.

CSJ,
Is the body seam twisted or does it run straight top to bottom? The picture of the bottle's base certainly looks like the bottle was molded in that shape and not re-heated and manipulated later.Making a mold in that shape would suggest an 'artsy' mass-produced bottle(Mexican,as vtspring suggests?),as it lacks the most important requirement for a commercial bottle-no where to put a label!(Not to mention at size and weight it would be hell to stack on shelves!

Definately an unusual bottle, however it was made!

Would a glass maker design a piece that would stand in their window to demonstrate their skill like a shoemaker might have a big shoe hanging from his sign? Could this be one? I suppose it would have a maker's mark then.

Would this be a competition piece for a State exhibition? Were there glass bottle making competitions?

To KAT:

I photographed the seam showing that it follows the twisting motion that deformed the bottle. So it was blown and then twisted while still warm. Also easy to see the may bubbles in this piece, note that the bobbles are elongated and twist as well! I think the bottom didn't change much as it was so heavy that I'm sure it was set on it's base while warm and then twisted. The twisting motion stops about 3/4's down so the base area has no twist. Otherwise it would be very unstable. As it is this piece can be rocked a couple of inches to the side but it is bottom heavy and settles right back to upright. Handy as it is so big it's best let on the floor!

I like Ride On's idea! Remember seeing stuff like that as a kid (60's) at the Illinois county fair. Usually they were brand name soda bottles like Coke or 7 UP.

Here is a photo showing that the seam stops at the lip

and another showing that the seam on the lip is separate from the bottle's seam. What's interesting is that inside the lip, the seam is smoothed and can only be seen from the exterior. The entire lip has a different texture than the bottle, rougher. The tiny bright spots on the bottle aren't dust but bubbles.

To Ride On:

Here is a link to a "Twisted Coke bottle" on eBay. What I remember seeing in the 60's.

I think that this bottle is not all that old. My guess is that it is a bottle for imported wine -- chianti is often bottled in large and imposing forms.

It is machine-made, no doubt. I have tried to imagine the mold in which this bottle was blown, but the bottle appears to be impossible to remove from a two-piece mold in this form.

I think that the vertical ribs were never intended to be twisted. I think the bottle slumped under its own weight during the annealing process. That slumping put the twist in the ribs.

(Of course, the slumping may have resulted from later heating, say in a kiln. But then you have to ask, Why would anyone do that to a bottle that was already a novelty?)

The question remains, How did this grotesquely-deformed bottle get into circulation? Why wasn't it thrown into the cullet bin? Perhaps some glass-works employee decided that it was so homely that it was beautiful.

Modern glass-makers still bring home "error bottles," and there may be some limited collector interest in them. Errors just don't get into normal circulation these days.

Anyway, that's my theory.
