I started a privy last Monday in my hometown . Atleast I thought it was a privy. It turned out to be a hole with cinders and a little trash. My brother came over and help me finish and fill it. We probed at the rear of the lot and found the real privy. It's a 4'x4'x10' hole. He had to take off at 2:30 but before he left we did find one "Union Made" slug plate whiskey flash and a shurd from, what I believe to be, a local brown and white "Mini-Jug". We also found a fairly common Wheeling Beer, which you see the top of in the photo.
As of press-time I have her down to about 8' with two feet left to dig tomorrow. Check out the layers in the photo. That's what we want to see when we're in a hole. It feels like there's a trash layer at the bottom. But you all know how that goes. You don't know until it's all out of the hole!
By the way you may recognise the photo of the steel mill from the movie "Deer Hunter".

Yeah we have been there to this weekend,we dug what we thought was a pit behind a 1780s house and we started getting this gray chit, it looked like slack lime. But as we went down it got gooey and wet,it went down about 4 foot.we filled that baby in and moved on. Its called paying the dues, something will pop sooner or latter,it always does.Rick

Hi Zane, great pics, crystal clear.  What's the camera you use?  Thanks for sharing and congrats on what you found.         Paul

Well, I didn't get to finish it but I made a lot of head-way. I got the bottm and now have to go up the sides a bit. I found a few keepers but nothing fantastic. I had a buddy who doesn't really want anything out of the hole(best kind huh) help me. We dug up about 6-8 unembossed meds and a broken amber blob. But we also got a #11 Brookfield insulator(info please). We found a nice Sanford Barrel Ink. and the bottle I have pictured here. You should be able to make out the embossing. I need some information on them if anyone can help out.

By the way, the camera is a Kodak and yes it takes nice photos. They run around $100 at Walmart now.

The Little Rhody Bottle book list two variants of H.I. Houghs, Providence, RI, but they are both mortar and pestle druggist bottles. There is no "Fine Extracts" mentioned, so that one appears to be unlisted. Here is a link to the bottle book page, scroll about half way down. Nice digs!!!
