Picked up this Dr. Jayne's yesterday.  Could this be an iron pontil with no residue left (it's not smooth in the identation)?  What type of base mold would this be?   I really like the old style double collar tops.  Thanks for any input.

I don't think the pontil mark would conform so evenly to the edges of the mold marks, and the edges of the bottle for that matter.. looks like a 2pc mold to me ..snapcase.. nice applied lip, that's 1870 -ish. Nice bottle

Doesn't look to be pontiled. The mold is an early post mold, where as two halfs of the mold closed in onto the base of the mold which is what made the oval on the bottom, where the three pieces all joined. The design seems to have come into use in the late 1860's or 1870's... Possibly even earlier then that. It was an improvement on the two piece hinge mold which simply hinged two halfs of the mold together. The post mold added an extra piece being the bottom of the mold which made for smoother bases and more stable bottles. Its called a post mold because the part of the mold that formed the base stuck up, like a post sort of, and the the two halfs that formed the body of the bottle closed around and up to it.

Hey Matt,

This is one of the best descriptions of the post mold process that I've read. Well written, and to think it likely done on a 'smart phone,' too tweeterific!

Thanks, it's a hard thing to explain! A picture says a thousand words though
