Any tips on UV for coloring?  What kind of  lightbulbs?  How long, etc.  Thinking of adding a little more amethyst to a few of mine (but not the dark Purple that I see in some irradiated). Any help appreciated.  Thanks

I was always told that if you build a box and line it with tin foil, install black lights in it, and inclose the bottles in it for several days, it will do a number on them giving them a dark blue color. I am with you Lobes, I think it ruins a bottle. Makes its color look fake and to me quite unattractive. There is no way in the world I would want to do such a thing to a good bottle.  I believe if a person had a bunch of clear bottles that contained maganease (think I spelled that wrong) who wanted to darken them up for window display I could see no harm in that. It is regretable though that you do see bottles from time to time that have had this procedure done to them being passed off for sale as true color. Again, it seems to me it is quite obvious when you see them, but a beginning collector could be fooled by this I suppose.

I am confused...
So dark purple is bad? Light purple is good?
Or no purple is good? Any purple is bad?
What is the threshold?

Please relax a little.  I am with you regarding the "purple" bottles.  That was not my plan.  To me they look artificial and very unnatural. L. C. had the right slant---I have a few that are tinted amethyst that I would like to darken  somewhat (but not purple). Rather than exposing them to the sun for months, years, whatever?,  I considered using UV to accomplish the same results. To me, the dark purple you see is obvious and artificial.  Thanks to all for the comments.

One way I've seen out west is to stick them in a foil lined box on the roof for a few months.  Black lights wont work.  Look around in either HVAC supply, or medical supply for germicidal lamps.  They must produce UV light.

I use a UV bulb and base assembly that is designed for air sterilization in furnace air ducts. Just had to make a box for it.  UV bulbs for water treatment will work but they often have jackets around them. Also you can just plug these bulbs into 120VAC , they need ballasts like most flourecent bulbs.

The roof method is a bit risky due to the environmental issues. For instance they will get very hot and if a thunderstorm comes up and drops cool rain on them guess what happens.

True dat.  I've never tried the roof method, but I talked to a shopowner in Colorado about it.  He told me the entire rooftop of their store was covered in bottles turning purple.  He did mention losing some, mostly ones that were full of water and froze.  I wonder if lenses intensify UV light from the sun?  Might have to do a project.  Spotted purple meds?

Things that are lenses and mirrors for visable light dont always work well for UV and infrared parts of the spectrum.  I suppose you could mask a bottle and just purple a section of it. Never tried it. Sounds like fun.

Nuke em!That's what I say!Purple is beautiful.People like them, period!I DON'T, but it is a way to make something uncollectable, collectable. The problem lies when people start altering every hutch or local bottle they get there hands on not knowing anything about rarity.People give me crap sometimes, but if it helps pay for my time digging selling crap that would otherwise be thrown back in holes, who cares.I've never sold one as suncolored or sold a funky amber colored one that would change back to clear.I dislike this behavior as much as the next guy.

I say we tie-dye Bush, take everything back to the true declaration, and leave the 13th alone, since we're all slaves anyway. To the man, that is.

I say Nuke em too !  You should always assume that when you acquire an amethyst bottle that it has been enhanced , unless you picked it up off the ground yourself.  Nevertheless , a little more color on the shelf is never a bad thing, especially if it started out as a plain jane clear med.

Identical bottles in an antique shop. Same mold, same condition, same price. One's naturally sun colored the other's clear. You just had to pay for cosmetic surgery on your mother's varicose veins so you only afford one. Which one do you choose for your display collection?
