I thought everyone might get a kick out of a bottle Josh and I dug yesturday. It is a half pint Union Clasped Hands-Cannon with a root grown around it.Had to cut the root and remove it as one piece.I am debating removing the root, but I think I might display as is,any thoughts?I think with a iron pontilled base and a sheared lip it is a rare mold but not too sure.Any information is appreciated.Doug

Here are the pictures. The root is acually grown into the inside of the lip, holding the bottle secure!

That's really neat. If that was mine i would keep the root on it and sand the root down and put some polyurethane on it. Very nice bottle either way.

Fantastic embossing on this one! I love those cannons. Have one in a bigger size, but so much nicer to look at on a smaller flask.

I'd definitely leave the root on. It only adds to the interest of it. I've never seen that flask with an iron pontil.

Nice bottle, and root Doug -
I think the coolest collection in the world would be a collection of bottles with roots around, or through them. I've not seen many.
It would be a collection that could in no way be duplicated, no matter how hard you tried.
I'm dyin to dig something really good.  I've dug some good stuff lately, but I want a killer!
Continued good luck

Doug - great find!  I can't believe how well the flask cleaned up - you did a great job on that.  Now you have a flask that is unlike any other - an extremely rare root variant!

Thanks for all the feedback and nice comments from everyone.I am definately going to leave the root attached, after seeing it cleaned up a little.

Annie,I was able to get all the dirt off but the glass is still sick so I just gave it a quick coat of baby oil.It is a great alternative to tumbling but needs to be reapplied every few months.

Bram,You seem to be consistently having good digs so you are due for the "Big One".You guys have some great bottles in your neck of the woods so whether its a pontilled stoddard med or a teal druggist from Great Falls or Berwick I hope it's in the next hole you dig.

Shag,We ended up having a good day after getting off to a slow start.Dug a TOC hole that produced 6 or 7 druggists and some other junk, and finally got into an older pit and ended up getting a few nice keepers.

Brian,Do you know if this mold is listed with a pontil in McKearin's?It has the F A & Co. in the oval  under the clasped hands. Thanks for any info.

I think I'd leave it as is myself. I would keep a close eye on it over the next few weeks. As the root drys out, it could possibly loose it's grip on the bottle. I think I'd store it in a safe place untill I was sure how stable it is after it cures up. Great find!!! Did you get any other pontils? Chris

I guess I am the only one who wants the root taken out Doug! That bottle would be a beauty if it were tumbled.
