After 2 years of probing and looking around for a privy, I dug my first privy (that was not pre-dug by someone else) and all I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!! It turned out to be 4 foot X 5 foot and 5 foot deep and found several good bottles in it with embossing. But one of them just blows me a way. I found a very crude pontiled UNION Historical Flask. On one side it shows 13 stars with the word UNION and a large shield with clasp hands a wreath around it.
On the other side shows a cannon and flag. it is a medium blue bottle that is in perfect condition. It is 71/2 inches tall, I think it's a pint size.
I still need to take the dirt out of the bottle and try to clean it the best that I can. This things so cool I'm afraid to touch it!!!!!!! Has anyone ever seen one like this?
What is the best way to clean a bottle like this?

Thanx for any help you can give me!

WOW!!!! That is superb !!!! Congrats. I think we all would LOVE to make a find like that. I can't wait to see some of the others you found. How about some more details about the location and age of the site etc? By the way, I'm guessing (comemorating) the war of 1812 maybe? There was a real surge of patriotism after that time...

Way to go treasurehunt that is what it is all about, digging a good bottle that gives you a smile from ear to ear That is a good flask I'm not sure on the value but a pontiled flask with that much embossing fetches good $. Being a bottle you dug yourself it should be priceless Soak it in a bucket of water and get the dirt out of it, looks like it may require a tumble to get the sickness out of it also. Yes, "WOW" is a very good decription. PD

I was driving thru a old town and saw near the mainstreet area 4 or 5 large lots that looked like it was just was buldozed. so first I pulled out my detector and didn't find much except a old token good for 5 cents in drinks and lots of nails. so then I pulled out my 4 foot probe and went along the back fence line where the heavy trucks didn't make the ground rock hard. And after a while the probe went all the way down, then on the next probe it went down all the way be with lots of chrunching after about 2 feet. I still wasn't sure it was a privy because I could not find where the privy started or stopped. So I just started digging in the middle and worked my way out.
What was cool was finding all the seeds for the first time. I stayed till dark then came back the next day with my sanborn maps and there was 4 houses and a church on the land on my 1902 map.

One of my guides saying $60 to $100, once cleaned up if condition is outstanding I would expect, at auction or e-bay probably go higher than that. There are experts on this forum that will be able to assist you better than me though on flasks. PD

Congrats Treasure!! Looks like a "G Wll-39". Your first step to cleaning will be to soak it.
Submerge it in a shallow container with tepid water (nuetral tempature) and let it sit for a few days. The muck inside should loosen. To speed things along slide a thin, stiff piece of wire into the mud. Nice and slow try not to touch the glass with it. Make several holes this way. just let it soak. To get this bottle looking it's best, it will have to be tumbled. NICE FIND!!!!!!!
Rich.

I started to clean it and it is more Aquamarine but where the glass is thicker, it's a nice darker blue.

Looking at the third pic it appears to be light blue a.k.a. cornflower. $230 probably higher after you have it tumbled. Really nice bucko!

Congrats Treasure!! Looks like a "G Wll-39". ...

I'm not sure about that, the cannon looks more like Group XII-40 (these are McKearin-Wilson flask numbers), but the obverse is totally wrong. The GXII-40 is listed in light blue, which this flask seems to be, and was made by Fahnstock, Albree & Co. Pittsburgh. The description of GXII-41 fits well, but the detail can't be seen well enough for me to make it out. Check this picture and see if you can figure it out treasurehunt.

Here is the text describing 40 and 41, I think it's 41. You need to clean it up and count leaves, spokes, etc. to really figure it out. Could easily be an unlisted variant too, there are lots of those still out there. Someday someone should do a revision of McKearin and Wilson's tables. Nice find though, I'd figure $100-$300 depending color and on how sick the glass ends up being.

I agree with AMBLY...appears to be from GXII-40 group...Is it a pint, 1/2 pint, quart? A better pic of the cannon side would help....On the Union side is there any "ghost" embossing in the frame? I can't see any FA&Co in your flask....you may indeed have an unlisted variant.
Great find !!!

AMBLY....last I heard Wilson was working on revising the book...updating with new finds and info...Been waiting for it to be released and wondering also.... will I be able to afford it...??

I posted some better pictures of my historical flask in my folder (coin737).
If you need more pictures just let me know. To me it looks like pontil but
I'm just a beginner at this stuff. Is this a new version of this flask? Is
this a pontil? What might the value be? And how might I get the rest of the
dirt out that is near the neck since I don't want to scrach the the top
using brushes.

Thanx for all your help! Sorry I didn't post sooner, man is this is a busy
time of the year.

The cannon on my flask has the cannon centered on the opposite wheel as compaired to GXII-40 or GXII-42. What do you think?
