Once again I have found another broken piece of one of the many extremely rare local milks from Ellicott City. There are only 4 milk bottles from Ellicott City that are semi easy to find but after you get past those then the rest are so rare some of them you may never see and are only known by one or 2 examples. I know of the Newton Farm Dairy in Ellicott City and their milk bottles I list as uncommon in my guide. The Baker family moved to the farm in the 1920s and named their dairy the Newton Farm Dairy. I believe there was a dairy farm there before the Baker family bought the land but there isn't any local history on it . The area where the Baker's farm was is called Mt. Hebron and now their is a high school and large neighborhood there. There is a listings of all known maryland milks and in the Ellicott City section there is a listing for a "Mount Hebron Dairy". I never thought this really existed since that is where the Newton Farm Dairy was but now im starting to be convinced that the Newton family owned the land and the Mt. Hebron Dairy before the Bakers moved in. I think the Baker family named the Newton Farm Dairy after the man whose name is in the middle of this slugplate. I believe this broken milk is from them but I have no idea and need alot of help. Maybe someone with an account on the old census websites can help. As you can see the sluplate is broken and I can't read the dairy name but the owner was ?. W. Newton the first initial is missing but maybe some one can search Newton in the census and find the right one. Here is the broken piece.

I wish you the best of luck on your research as these locals can be hard to pin down.  I have one from my town, the local paper is search-able online from 1888 to present, and have found no information on it yet.  I can find the family name, but have yet to get any reference of any nature to a dairy/milk/ or farm of any kind.

Thanks for your help. The local bottles can be very hard to track down information on especially if they are very scarce bottles. Information is just hidden away in different places just waiting for me to find though and im going to keep on researching.

Keep checking in at Google Books. They're constantly adding new material and I've found a lot of neat information on my local dairies in obscure publications like the "Milk Plant Monthly" and old herd registries. Sometimes it's a simple entry like so-and-so took over this operation or this dairy got a new machine, but it can give you some direction. Good luck! I have several local dairies and bottlers who I can't find any info on at all too!
