I picked this up while out hunting for jars today. One handle is missing but the jug is so different that I may have it repaired. The markings are underneath the glaze. Has anyone seen a similar jug?

Hello George,

Man that looks like a pretty delicate handle for an 8 gallon jug (I'm assuming gallons.)

Here's an older relative: "Note: An amphora (a "carry-both-sides"=two-handled jug) was used to store and/or transport wine or olive oil." From.

Little brother: From.

Strange cousin: From.

Cushman masterwork:
"Of all Cushman stoneware, this two-handled jug ranks as a masterpiece of both craftsmanship and decoration. Almost certainly it was made as a presentation piece to mark a special occasion. The use of two hearts incised into the body may indicate a wedding, yet the Liberty Pole with flags suggests a political context. The basket of tulips on the reverse side is equally unusual. Stamped "PAUL : CUSHMAN'S,” it measures 23½ inches high" From.

Triplets: From.

Yes, it is an 8 gallon. The lettering on the jug that you posted is the same stencil that was used on my jug. Is that jug yours? The merchant was probably small and was in a very rural area, so I suspect that items from him are quite scarce. I will get the handle replaced and take the jug to the Muncie, Indiana jar show in January. Some of the people from that area may be helpful with more info.

Hello George,

Nah, it's not mine, would that it was. It's over at this place.

I came upon this beauty, while looking for something else last night. Thought of you. Seems like a bargain to me. Beautiful amphora form.
