Unearthed a small brown bottle with Valentine' s Meat Juice in raised letters. Searching for information on approximate date in ciruclation, what exactly meat juice is/was and the worth of the bottle.

Have dug lots of these from various dumps from around the 1890 - 1910 period. The bottle has an unusual shape but unfortunately it is relatively common and the price at a bottle fair is only a couple of pounds or less, even for one in perfect condition.

When I first started bottle digging I was told that this bottle was responsible for the hobby taking off in the UK. It came about when somebody picked one up from alongside the canal at Ivor in Buckinghamshire and he went searching for more. A nice story but probably quite untrue.

Thank you so much for the information. It does have an unusual shape. We found this one on some farmland that we now own near what used to be an old home place. Thanks again.

Hello to all,
This is a bottle from right here in Richmond, Va. This info is from the book:
quote:

Bottled in Richmond 1819 -1920 by Vernon Grant

Valentine' s Meat Juice Works - Mann S. Valentine, prop.
1874 - 1877 they were located at: 21 S. 13th St.
1878 - 1883 they were located at: Main and Cary and 11th & 12th St.
1886 - 1920 they were located at: 601-05 E. Cary St.
Manufacturers of Valentine' s Meat Juice and Valentine' s Meat Juice & Glycerine.

They seem to be quite common around here. I' ve only dug one myself. One with a lable (triangle shaped) is more collectible - of course. A portion of the lable reads:

quote:

The result of an original Process of Preparing Meat and extracting it' s Juice, by which the elements of nutrition (most important to life) are obtained in a state ready for immediate absorption.

quote:

Directions.--- Dissolve one tea-spoonful of the Preparation in two or three table spoonfuls of cold or moderately warm water. The Use of Hot Water changes the character of the preparation.

Enclosed is a PIC ...I guess this is the bottle that you mentioned. Many people love these bottles and their shape. I have a in depth article on this bottle somewhere, but I can' t locate it at the moment. I hope this helps. Sincerely, Flaschenjager

This is it! Mine does not have the label. I am in the panhandle (northern) region of Florida. When I received the response from the UK, I knew that it must have been something that was mass produced and not a rarity. However, it is still quite a find and has much value to my family. It has such an interesting shape. Thanks so much for the information.
