Speaking of Fire Extinquishers or Fire Grenades, Anybody think this one has any value? I've been offered $50 bucks for it. BTW, it's drop dead MINT.

No idea the worth, but it's very pretty.  Hard to believe something that was meant to be destroyed was made so ornate.  Very cool.

Its alot better that $50 bucks. There was one very similar that sold at auction a couple years ago. I think the estimate was $1000-$2000. I don't remember what it actually brought. But I know that one is easily worth at least $500

Guys & Gals:

I have to make an apology. The way I posted this thread was unintentionally misleading. I was / am not phishing for a value or offers on the HARKNESS FIRE DESTROYER. It is one of, if not THE, most favorite bottles I own. I know it's worth a lot of $$$$$ but I had to laugh when I was offered $50 for it. When the thread about that Fire Grenade came up I couldn't resist in showing it off, rather sharing it with you.

I am sorry if anyone was mislead, I can certainly understand where one might be. I will be more careful in the future.

Hi botlguy,  I will have to look for my Fire Grenade book.  I haven't seen it in some time but I would like to check yours out.  The design of Fire Grenades was usually created to help it break when it was thrown into a fire area.  I am sure the grooved rings were for that purpose.  When I find out more - I will let you know.  RED Matthews

Hi again,  I didn't get this done quickly enough to add it with an edit approach.

I just recorded some data that included the embossing.

“/ HARKNESS \”  arched over  “/ FIRE \” center with “/ DESTROYER \” under arched. Is there any other embossing on it?   RED M.

I did not dig it, it was in a large collection I bought about 15 years ago.

Very very nice.!!..............I too am perplexed as to why something that nice would be used to crash and smash. Blows my mind. Oh by the way, I am not sure it would bring quite $50......that might be a stretch! LOL.........no need to apologize.

Hello, the fire grenade is indeed a very desirable example.  It appears to be empty of content and seal, to bring absolute top dollar most collectors want examples that are sealed with original content.  Unfortunately many fire grenades contained saline (salt water) or carbon tetrachloride.  Carbon tetrachloride is a very hazardous chemical which forms a vapor when spilled, or thrown as in the case of a grenade.  The vapor was very effective at putting out fires but also displaced oxygen which could be fatal to humans in confined areas.  It also cannot be shipped thru the mail.  Whether full or empty your grenade is super and the offer you received was an insult.  I have seen several empty grenades sell recently that were not nearly as nice as yours, for $100-$200.  Nice purchase.  By the way there are such things as reproduction grenades but they are pretty easy to tell from the "old" original glass and are usually marked as such.  Hope this helps, Tom.
