Hey all!

I just traded a neat old bath water tester (Dr. Forbes) for these here and the A&W bottle in the other thread.
Left to right,
~
Tinct. Arnica. for external use, put up by WW Mason
~
Peragoric, (with extensive directions) and a label on the back warning "CAUTION. Be careful to keep this medicine out of the way of children, as the effect of too large a quantity at one time would be very unpleasant and attended with danger." Put up by WW Mason.
.~
Tinct. Rhubarb. Dose "As a pugative".. Put up by WW Mason.
~
Pure Concentrated Extract Jamaica Ginger
Excellent in cases of Sudden colds, chills, Cholera, Morbus, Diarrhea. Etc. Dose from one half to one teaspoonful according to age and nessesity, Dilute freely and sweeten to taste.
Prepared expressly for FAMILY USE.
Prepared by WW Mason, Limerick Maine.

Comments?

I think the Ginger MIGHT be pontiled. It must have been refired? Isn't sharp, isn't an embossed "O" or letter...Pic to follow below...

Also, all these have the origonal seals on the top, never opened....the contents evaporated, and the Peragoric still reeks nasty.

Pontil on the Ginger????

Hi,
Your medicines look like they date to the mid 1890s +/-10yrs. The one is not pontil marked you are just seeing impressions from the mold I think.
Are they embossed at all or just paper label? I've seen some Mason bottles from R.I.

No embossing. I suspected the "pontil" was just mold slag..

Hi Oldtimer -

I checked my ME med listings for the book I'm working on but had no listing for a Mason from Limerick.  Did some searching and found the following info -

William W. Mason, born in 1843 in Maine or England (conflicting info).
In 1870 he was a woolen mill worker, no occupation given in 1900.
From the early 1870s into the early 1900s he was a notary and justice of the peace in Limerick.

My guess is that Mason dabbled in medicine/extract manufacturing around when Matt (Guntherhess) suggested, 1890s or so.

If you're willing to part with one of the bottles send me a PM, I don't have a ME med bottle from Limerick.

Later - Sam
