Today was a wacky night, and I'll tell ya why. We went geocaching tonight and were first led to a spot in a creek which had thousands of old bricks in the water.  I pulled five different talking bricks out that I didn't have.  Another spot was screaming "dump" before we even parked.  Of course it was an old roadside dump, to help with erosion.  The old logging road we were walking on had shards all over it, then I see this label sticking out of the gravel, embossed.  I thought surely that's not a whole bottle here where all kinds of tires have passed over it, sure nuff.

One of the last caches we grabbed, right before my brake line exploded on top of a hill, an hour from home, was in the parking lot of an antique shop.  It was the kind where they have stuff outside, and inside, so I stuck with outside.  They had a huge selection of embossed sodas, milks, and beers from Ohio PA and Indiana.  I grabbed a couple milks that I thought might do ok on ebay.  I grabbed this one just because it was from PA for $5, howd I do?  Embossed S. A. Foster DAIRY Washington, PA quart slugplate

And this one I grabbed because I was trying to decide between it, and a 5c deposit milk.  I figured 3 cents was older, was I right?  Embossed quart 3 cent deposit Property of the Dairy Package Corp. Cleveland, O  Never sold, must be returned.  I gave $6 for this one.  Both milks are in almost mint, with just a small spot from case wear on both.

Oops, I forgot.  The Ginger Beer says Miller Becker Co. on the shoulder, contents 7 1/2 oz. Cleveland Ohio Registered.  No makers mark, but IS 62 on base.

Thanks.  Yes, I found something saying that NeHy sued Ace for using Hy in their name long ago.  Musta worked.

This is the original:
The reason I incorporated this specimen into my collection is because Cleveland, Ohio, is the headquarters of the NEHI Company's nemesis ACE HI. This brand was a blatant take off on the NEHI name only worse. Instead of making a brand name from an American Indian word to sound like "knee high", this company used a term with the phonetic proximity of "arse high". Mr. Claud Hatcher, founder of NEHI, promptly brought a lawsuit against this company for its knavery and the term "HI" was dropped from the brand name. You may have heard and even seen some of the great amber glass bottles of the brand ACE GINGER BEER. They were a successful promoter of this flavor during this era. Mr. Bill Williams of Columbia, SC, a ginger beer specialist, has confirmed that there are some bottles in his collection from ACE HI with the mould modification apparent. The term "HI" is erased and the mould continued to be poured!

I am indebted to a scholar of this period, Dennis I. Smith of New York, who has studied the NEHI/ACE HI controversy and who alerted me to it. If you could show that there is a link of the St. Louis people to these Cleveland people, perhaps we could get the US Department of Homeland Security to check out any clandestine conspiracies!
