Hello Leonard,

I don't really know the prior contents. What is the capacity? I keep wondering where you find the bottles that you do. Are you in Southeast Asia, or more southerly?

"J Lum & Co
Address: 3 Clonbern Rd Remuera Auckland" From.

"There is considerable debate as to just what the "SRD" stands for. In the "Dictionary of Military Abbreviations: British - Empire - Commonwealth" by B.K.C. Scott, "SRD" is listed as "Service Rum Diluted". See additional information below. These crocks date from WWI and were probably in use until the beginning of WWII. Unofficially, the "SRD" also stood for "Soon Runs Dry" and "Seldom Reaches Destination"." From.

Hey Leonard,

What capacity is it? If a gallon, is it an Imperial gallon?

I vote for lime juice.

"The meaning of SRD will forever be debated but you'll find that (at least in my research) is that SRD means Supply Reserve Depot. This was located in Deptford and was the central location for Jug procuement, storage and fill. The IWM has an original filling tag on a jug identifying contents and ownership-return to "SRD (Supply Reserve Depot) Deptford".

The content tags were mandatory as much more than Rum filled these things. ASC manuals actually call them Lime Juice Jugs and were for Lime Juice and rum if unwickered and shipped in crates of 2.

If the bottles were wickered with colored bands painted on the wicker then they were filled with nasty stuff that was un-drinkable like ink. SRD can be found on stoneware jugs of variuos sizes, glass bottles, and containers." From.

Here in Australia this style of bottle was used for Vinegar and probably dates around 1930-1940
