Looks like the spring would act like a shock absorber, so, I would think it went on a vehicle of some sort.
Maybe attached to a buggy or carraige for traveling at night.

Hello Pat, you have me puzzled pertaining to the lamp, that is the first one of that nature I have seen. I wonder if Cap has seen this yet, I am wondering if possibly it could be military related. It does not appear to have had a mantle to me, or possibly the prongs that held a mantle have been broken off. Does it have the stem for raising the wick up and down, can't see one in the picture. If a person knew someone or knew of a chat sight online where lamp collectors get together as we with the bottles do here, it would be a good place to post a picture of it and ask the question as to what kind of a lamp it is.

As for you not answering me in previous messages, I thought nothing of it. But I do appreciate your explanation as to why you have not been able to do so. I myself have missed a few posts from members by accident on here , so I was not at all concerned.

I myself have bought and sold junk for years as well as collected it. I have collected bottles for over thirty years. Then one day I decided I wanted to collect everything, and have pretty well tried to do so for years. I made a pretty lengthly list some time back on here as to what I have collected. The pictures pretty well show a good part of the mess I have. Seems I have been a pack rat most of my life, just wish I had a large building to put it in. I am thinking of maybe having an auction this year with the intent to get rid of everything I have except for my first love of a hobby being the bottles. Seems it would be nice to have some order in my life for a change !

As for the bottle cap, I would love to have one if you wish to take the time of sending it to me. I will send you a personal email with my address. Hopefully, you will be able to find me amongst all the Foreigners ! Thanks in advance, Lou
