Morning....I was wondering what this whitish stuff might be. It's crumbly and I've found quite a bit of it close to the surface. It is about a quart inch thick....It reminds me of lye soap. thanks for the help farmgal...

It's probably some type of fungus like a mushroom.

I believe it is plaster from the walls of a house.

I've found it in old dumps before.

Hi BP,
That is lime. It was put on garbage, dead bodies and down privies, to cause whatever it was on, to break down faster. I find it more common in older dumps, in layers sometimes up to six inches thick, and in privies.
I uncovered one murder victim (I'm assuming she was murdered) in an 1840's crawl space that had a 4-6" layer over the entire skeleton.

And I woulda got away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling bottle diggers...

Thanx for clearing this one up, I have dealt with the lime layer before in past dumps, but never put two-and-two together.  Explains why I had extreme lung irritation after a dig through a white chalky layer during drought conditions several years ago = I musta got a lung full of slacked lime.

i agree that it looks like lime, and it is harmless, well, dont eat it, but i thought it was dumped over garbage and in privies to keep down the smell. greg
