Went out hunting this weekend and found this insulator.  Looks like a Whitall Tatum but doesn't say what it is.  Can anyone help?

That is a CD 153, and I believe it is a gaynor product. The only list for 3-5 dollars in the price guide, but still a nice piece to find.

Thanks,
Kyle Waters

How did you make that small?

And can anyone give anymore info on cleaning them?  I use wood bleach and has worked so far however, I bought some and (they were really dirty) when the come out of the bath they all had a white film. I have been greasing them down with vaseline and then wiping it off.  This works pretty good but the still don't look the same!  Any suggestions!!

OK, your next step for really dirty insulators would be using Lye. You can buy it at hardware( some) and farm supply stores. TSC( Tractor Supply Company) has it here in Canada, but I dont know if they do in the states. I will warn you that lye is VERY powerful, ALWAYS wear rubber gloves, and safety goggles while using this stuff. I also suggest storing it in a tub outside. You pretty much mix it up in batches as directed, and let the insulators soak like using Oxalic acid( wood bleach). It can be used many times, but as I already said, be careful with it, its dangerous!

Thanks,
Kyle Waters

Thats what I thought.  I have been toying with trying that but, like you say it's bad.

What about a good referance book?  I just started collecting about 9 months ago and have collected about 300 1/2 by hand others I've bought.  It's really fun.  Now I have a lot of insulators and very little knowledge.  I have several good web sites but I really like a good book!

OK in the way of insulator book you want to check out this one first. It is the glass Price guide, and has diagrams of every single glass insulator from North America. It is also your price guide, and has every colour listed for every embossing( that are known at least.... which is alot!) This book has been my bible for the last few years.... its a 2003 edition, and a new one SHOULD be coming out mid 2007, although it hasnt ben finalized yet. Normally they do a new print evey 4 years.....

http://www.insulators.com/books/priceguide-2003.htm

Now since this book does not include porcelain insulators, you would want this book if you want to get your porcelain prices as well. If you have porcelain insulators from Canada, they are not covered in this book ( that only means if they are manufactured in Canada). This book will have all the different makes and styles of porcelain uniparts and multiparts from the United States, and the prices as well.

There are also lots of other good referance books out there buy visiting:

Thanks,
Kyle Waters
