Status: offline 		Well a dump i am digging at is located near my aunts house. Well, they took a walk near and said it was covered in poison ivy, you could'nt even get near the dump. What should i do?? Its the only dump that i found old and good bottles at.

Status: offline 		Pinpoint its location for me and I will clean it out for you (literally).

Get someone like me who can eat the stuff like salad and who you can trust (unlike me) to help clear it away for you, or deck out it a tyvex suit with face shield/safety goggles, workgloves with latex glove underliners, and a good dust mask and clear it away yourself.  All items should be available at local Home Depot.

Remember though that even the roots can get ya (especially if you are particularly sensitive) - so I would continue to keep skin covered as much as possible post clearing operations.

At least you got a good dump - most of us are wandering aimlessly through the poison ivy/oak/sumac looking for a dump worth digging...

Status: offline 		I believe that after getting poison ivy so many times you actually become immune to it.
Does anyone else feel that way???

Nothing worse that poison ivy.

Status: offline 		 I have a buddy who thought it might be a good idea to just burn a sizable patch of it out of his backyard. A nice controlled burn with the garden hose at the ready, he tended it like a good member of Smoky's Rangers. Within an hour of standing around the area tending it with his rake he started to itch. Twenty minutes later his face and neck exploded. Moments later he was on the way to the emergency room in the back of an ambulance. While lying in his bed later that evening hooked up to an IV drip, peering through two tennis ball sized slits and covered from his ankles to the top of his head in a nasty red bubbly rash he had time to ponder his decision to light the back yard on fire. It was on the inside of his nose and down his throat and the betting pool gave him a 60% chance of dying. His neighbors within a 200 yard radius of the burn where affected to some degree. Seems the irritant is carried and magnified in the smoke so I'd rule out burning as an option.....

Status: offline 		Yes Woody, I used to be incredibly suseptible to poison ivy, I missed 10 days of school with it as a kid! Now I just get a little on the insides of my wrists if I dig a long time in the roots.

Status: offline 		The oil in the sap causes the reaction. It comes from the leaves , stems , roots, anywhere you damage the plant. The oil is active long after the plant is dead so killing it wont totally solve your problem. You can get a reaction off a shovel that you used a year ago. There are medication now that are somewhat effective in preventing a bad reaction. Try wearing rubber gloves under your digging gloves. make sure you wash all your clothes and tools after digging. You will probably still get it. Just one of the dangers of digging.

Status: offline 		I never got poison Ivy in my life either, I also can eat it, make a loin cloth out out it etc.
Did you ever hear the old saying, does a bottle digger chit in da woods while digging a dump? well they do, and you have to wipe with something hahah thats how I found out I couldn't get poison Ivy.

Status: offline 		I not allergic to it at all I could role a round in it and never get it some peolple get it and some people don't but I have also heard that even if you havn't ever had it all of your life just want day you can all of a sudden develop a allergy to it and get it.

Status: offline 		Round here we call it "poison oak", slightly different species which has oak-like leaves.
I've never really caught it and I only get a slight redness for a couple of days.
When digging through poison oak roots the sap would often drip on my hand or arm.
I used some dusty dirt to soak up the sap drops with decent success.

Status: offline 		It doesn't bother me to much either. I get alittle itchy but no rash.  A friend of mine always rubed himself down with vasoline to keep from getting the rash. Don't know if it really works but he never showed any signs of the rash. Also heard that meat tenderizer works for the sting but never tried it.

Most any weed killer that lists poison ivy will get rid of it in time but the ones that are made just for it will kill and neutralize it alway down to the roots.

I would spray it with Round Up like you buy at a feed and seed store not that diluted crap from Wally World. Combat Woody Brush and Weed Killer is better if you can still get it. Kills everything but centipede grass. Then remove the top soil down to about 8inches. It is alot of work but it will get the job done. Wear long pants, boots, long sleve shirt and dust mask just in case. Bulldozer works well but is tough on the bottles.

Or, like Mike said, "wait till winter"

Status: offline 		Dead of winter is probably the best answer.  I am extremly vulnerable to poison ivy.  Great cheap remedy to it is predisinone (sp?).  It is a very cheap anti-inflammatory and arthritic med that wipes out poison ivy very quickly.  I wonder what would happen if you took it before you dug?  Would you get it at all?
