Hello . . . I recently got interested in the bottle gig . . . researching, aging, identifying makers marks etc... and find it all pretty interesting. I (my wife) acquired some bottles, not the exciting way you guys/gals get them by digging them up but at an auction. When she brought them home I saw them and thought what a bunch of dirty crap. Most of them were throw ins or in a box lot where she only wanted a particular piece and had to take the whole box full. I started cleaning them up and realized how pretty and/or unusual some of them were . . . I think that’s when I got bit. Anyway this little blue bottle was one of them, there is no makers or any mark at all on it. I found the historicbottles.com site . . . a great site, and was able to find out a few things about this bottle. It is mouth blown/vent holes and has a tooled finish . . . I think it’s from around 1900- 1920? Does anybody know what a bottle like this was used for? It measures about 3" tall X 1 1/4" wide X 3/4" thick with a ½" opening. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
“Crazy Man”

There's no way to tell without any visible embossing what the bottle was used for unless you find a duplicate with a label and/or contents. The date range you've guessed is accurate.  Bottles with a small opening would be for liquids, small pills or powders.  Large mouth openings on bottles are mainly for foods.  Anything from chemicals to cough syrup, liquor, paint, etc, could have been in that bottle.  A local bottle collector or antique shop dealer could narrow your search. Welcome to the forum!

Thanks "beendiggin" for the quick reply . . . I kinda thought it might be hard knowing what was in it. Just knowing that someone hand worked that little bottle is pretty amazing to me, I'm satisfied with that.

Thanks again,
"Crazy Man"
