Whats the history on this flask? - 3/2/2008 3:30:50 PM    ncbred77 Posts: 200 Joined: 3/12/2007 From: Macclesfield, NC Status: offline How old, what was it used for etc....  I know it may be hard to believe but this bottle was laying right on top of the ground about 5ft away from the privy.  First thought was someone has already dug it.  Didn't look that way to me.  No other bottles, shards, dirt laying around.  There were your typical wine, 40oz and soda bottles around the house though.  Pine trees surrounded where I found the bottle but nothing covered it.  Looks as if someone layed it there yesterday. Has an amethyst tint to it, no chips, cracks or defects.  Dumb luck I guess. Attachment (1) Post #: 1

It seems it has been in the open for awhile, because it is turning "purple" which takes time to do in sunlight. This means the bottle was made before around 1915 or so ,as it has the mineral manganese in it and that is what makes it turn purple. Manganese was not put into later bottles. I know some one else can tell you better than I can.Don't find many 1900 or so bottles laying on top of the ground! _____________________________ They say don't go on WOVERTON MOUNTAIN' if you're looking for a wife. Nice little registered whiskey flask from around the late 1800's...  1890 maybe.  The circle in the middle is where a slug plate embossing could have been added. They also stuck lables on the bottle in this location. The purpleish color is referred to as "Sun colored amethyst" in bottle books it will be abreviated as "SCA" Glassman is right on the money about the manganese. Hope to see more of your finds.
