I've been watching some jars on e-bay that are "whittled". What is whittled and does it affect the rarity or value?

I suppose whittled glass is a little more rare than non-whittled but there are plenty of each so it's not a huge factor. As for effecting value, if you where to put the exact same jar (same mold) side by side, the whittled jar would get more bids by far. Just a more interesting bottle. Now if you sold them separately, weeks apart, my guess is they'd sell for pretty much the same price. This holds true for most if not all antique bottles. The whittling, caused by the molten glass being blown into a cold mold, adds a lot of character.

Just a little further clarification...

The term "Whittle" or "Whittled" in regards to describing old bottles is used in regards to the appearance of the glass of the bottle/jar.

"Whittle" is that wavy, or "hammered" look the glass some old bottles and jars have, as opposed to smooth glass. When you run your hand over the jar/glass, you'll feel the slight "waves"

Neither is "better" than the other, per se, but a lot of collectors like the 'whittle'/additional texture. Many people find the additional depth more pleasing to the eye, some dont. All personal preference.

Best,
-Julie
