Hello All,

I'm new to the forums and I'm looking for some info on a bottle that was found on the site of a hotel development in Bedfordshire, I'm working with the Fire Brigade to try and identify the bottle and contents:

The bottle is a clear glass bottle around the size of a small milk bottle, it has been heat sealed at the top and dipped in a red wax.  The bottle is identified by an embossed marking on the side reading:

"William Miller Patent"
"Poison"
"No. 12"

The bottle was retrieved from under the floorboards of a stable block and was stored in a sand-filled metal tin.  We have thus far determined that the bottle was manufactured after 1908 (confirmed by the patent) and was produced by William Miller, Glasgow.  However if it was possible to determine the contents without cracking the seal it would make our life very much easier.

Can you post a photo of the bottle? It was sure would help. If not a really good description, size [measured], shape weight{heavy or lite] and any markings not already mentioned like single letters or numbers.

Fair enough, details as follows:

Height: 180mm to shoulder of bottle, 210mm to tip of heat selaed end.
Diameter: 80mm at top, 60mm at bottom

There are no other markings, although there is a seam on both sides running vertically down each side of the bottle, the company that made it were a fire engineering company suggesting the possibility that it an acid cannister from a chemical fuelled fire extinguisher but this has not been confirmed as yet.

You made some pretty good assumptions. It is a fire extinguisher charge. you dumped the charge into the extinguisher and pumped it up to create pressure. I can't find a photo of one but if I do I will post it.

There may be some others on this forum with more info on that particular setup.
