Wistarburgh or Glassboro /Stanger made Chestnuts. - 9/9/2010 11:09:04 PM    Steve/sewell Posts: 4295 Joined: 1/23/2010 Status: offline Of all the bottles I collect nothing catches my eye like a good old fashioned colonial American made chestnut flask. Both  bottles are exactly the same in color leading me to believe that not only were they made at the same factory but that they were made by the same person.Although they are plain in looks these bottles were around when Washington was President.These are the bottle types that forever changed my collecting focus from the mid and upper 1800s to the mid 1700 to the mid 1800 hundreds.These bottles are thin walled free blown,paddled,have deep pontils, potstones, and nicely rolled lips. Wistarburgh is a strong candidate as the place of manufacture, but so is Glassboro as the glass working Stanger family led by their father Solomon Stanger migrated from Wistarburgh to Glassboro when the Revolutionary war ended Wistarburh.These bottles range in age from 1775 to 1795. They are a nice green aqua in color more close to Glassboro in this respect but Wistarburgh also had this color just not in abundance. The taller one is 11 inches tall and 7 inches wide at its widest,the shorter one is 8 and a half inches tall and 5 and three quarters  wide at it's widest point .Here are some pictures. Thanks for the Corning pictures. I would love to have some historical flasks...even common one would do me. I have thought a couple times about selling all my apothecaries and vet meds and using the proceeds to buy some flasks. In the end I figure I might make enough to buy a couple... I actually had one historical flask at one point. It was large and I think what is called a double eagle. In my haste to pare down my collection before our first big move 20 years ago I traded it to someone...for what I now know was a very poor trade. I also traded a large iron pontiled umbrella ink...another very bad trade. Live and learn! _____________________________ Always looking for veterinary bottles, American and foreign. Will sell it here before posting if anyone is interested. The glass and lip treatment is very similar to the chestnuts. Huge tubular pontil with iron residue. Perfect bottle from an old collection.
