Well, it's certainly not from after 1900. That appears to be a very nice black glass, probably wine, from the 1700's, or early 1800's. Really nice find!

Theres a lot of erosion on the neck but I'd say late 1700s. You don't see that kind of find very often any more. Nice.

I agree with Miles . Freeblown (unless it was in one heck of a fire) Probably late 18th century. Nice bottle ! Since it ain't mine, I hope it's yours!

Hey Bttlmark...

Very nice... very old piece, I'd say somewhere early 1700's to mid 1750's or so...
Definitely freeblown, black glass and there appears to be a "laid on ring" at the top... very similar to an early Ladies leg type of bitters bottles that I have seen, allthough this probably held some kind of rum. Early English or Dutch mallet maybe...

It's in great condition and you should make every effort to get the GPS numbers from the area where this fisherman was dragging, because they are good indicators of old shipwreck sites. Get the depth, area, location where he was dragging (I assume it was a dragger cause they don't come up in gill nets or pots/traps).

That type of bottle indicates that if it did come off of a wreck, the wood has pretty much already deteriorated and the only things left of the wreck would be balast stones, bottles, ferrous and non ferrous metal (iron, gold, silver and glass!!!)

Great find... yould really have that one cleaned as best you can. That old glass will deteriorate and start to flake apart after a while..

Talk to the fisherman and see if you could work out some deal with him. It might be marked on a chart as some kind of underwater obstruction, then you can always find someone with an underwater "Drop video" camera to check it out. I just happen to have one at my disposal, in case you were lookin...

Hey Bttlemark...

That stuff is coming from somewhere... it would be wise to get into the water and take a look around. Don't wait for something to wash up.. Can you get a picture of that cannon? I'd love to see that. You could E-mail it to me and I won't share it with anybody... I just want to take a look...

Thats where ships went to hide from huricanes and get sunk anyway. Look for other clues. The cannon is probable a signal cannon from a war ship.

Post some pics if you can.

He sold the cannon,I think he got two thousand.
He doesn't have any digital images but I will get a pic of a pic and post or send.It won't be anytime soon though since he lives a couple hours away.
I have been thinking of doing some wading & maybe snorkling when the water warms.

Do you find much of this type bottles in Maine waters Wayne?

Hey Bttlmark...

Good to hear from you... I find English mallets and others have found some nice Dutch onions, but I haven't seen a "Lady's Leg" free blown black glass up here yet... Not from anyone that I know or dive with anyway... That one you have is a nice piece. When you see the glass start to flake, that means it is getting sick, so you need to get it cleaned or contact the local historical society to see if they can suggest how it should be preserved. Some of the guys/gals on the forum might know how to treat something that old... Robert "Bob" Marx, underwater archeologist, has written a number of books on the subject and it would be wise to take a look at them...

About the cannon... the signal cannons were very small... even smaller than the "swivel" guns. They were used to signal towns, forts, upon entry to harbors... give salutes... signal other ships and so forth... without seeing the cannon, I couldn't say what it was used for. four foot cannon was used on a lot of small ships... the bigger the ship, the bigger the cannon. They would also have identifying marks on them and relate to maker, country of origin, weight... stuff like that. Very interesting stuff...

The bottle is stable with no flaking.
Cannon is about 2 Ft. long with no marks that indicate maker.
My bud knows where two large ones are able to be seen{where about a year ago}but not sure of how to get them out of the mucky, deep mud.Much different than the New Englad mud.
I wonder if there is much of a market for rusty old cannons?

Hey Mark...

What, are you kidding??? There is a huge market for stuff like that! I have all the equipment to do that sort of thing ... dredges, jet nozzles, air bags, hoists, dive boat, you name it... I'm not trying to blow my own horn, but I have lifted 6 ton granite mooring blocks, salvaged 20 ton commercial fishing boats, dug ten foot underwater holes to make pipeline repairs... You know I can do it... I'm lookin for an excuse to come down your way, anyways...

Have air? Will travel!!!

Mark there is a market out there for anything. One man's trash is another's treasure! I am sure there are mamy guys out there that would just love to have an old rusty cannon sitting in his yard. That is if their wife would let them have it. I would, but the deed restrictions through our home association would probably not allow me to. They almost had a fit when I placed an old painted pump and a half of an oak whiskey barrel as a flower planter in my yard.
