We got out yesturday, despite the weather and dug a privy that dated to the 1860's.It didn't have a lot in the way of bottles but we managed a nice pontilled fruit jar and a couple intact pieces of stoneware. We dug a broken yellowware urinal that I decided to save the pieces to for a repair.Ended up with most of it,with only two small holes. Here is a picture of it glued.

Doug that pretty cool I've only ever found one broken. Are then fairly common in your area?

Chris

I have a similar earthenware urinal that I use as a planter. Found it in North Dakota. Strange thing about North Dakota -- which I call Mayberry on the Prairie -- is that with mass outward migration from the state there are countless homesteads abandoned outright. Because the remaining population has an abiding respect for property rights (and is largely over the age of retirement) these farmsteads remain unmolested. Thus, it is not uncommon to find these houses with kitchen tables still set awaiting a dinner party that never occurred 60 or more years ago.

I have seen a few of them broken but definately not common.I have never messed with gluing one before because they are so big and in too many pieces. What do you use to fill your holes in pottery with? Thanks

Doug,

Honestly i don't fill the holes I just glue them and display them as is. Small holes really don't bother me that much.

Chris

Amazing.  Nice job on the finding and better on the gluing.  GET this..went to the flea market today and someone had one of these urinals  but in white.....he was claiming it was from the 1700's.  Oh god ! !
Nice job.

I dug one of those broken a while back. It was rockingham or bennington glaze and I called it a bedpan. LOL. I should have kept it and glued it back together, but that was when I first started digging and still didn't keep broken stuff!!! There are several finds including stenciled jugs and crocks, yelloware chamber pots, and that urinal that I wish I would have kept and glued back. Oh well, we live and we learn. Pretty cool find Doug and a good save!!! I'm with Chris, I'd leave it as is. That little hole don't hurt it none being that it's a glueback. Chris

Thanks for the replies guys.I don't worry about the holes either, just need some practice for the better stuff.

Ben,I wouldn't worry about passing the one up,they don't hold much value.Where do you display a urinal? The wife says it wont make a nice wall vase.

I think sheet rock spackle works good for small holes and cracks.
Its cheap, water based, and can be removed if desired. Once dry you can smooth it with a damp rag. It shrinks some so do it in coats. It takes various paints well.

You could always use a sandless grout. Not removable but it would bind the separate pieces of the hole or gap together very strongly. Another plus would be you could add the color to the mix instead of water. This would color the patch throughout. a glaze to add shine to finish it off.

looking at it again I'd apply a piece of mesh drywall tape to the inside first, sticking it with a loose grout mix. this would give you a good base to fill the hole as well as strengthening the broken section.

not very, let it set up slightly then tool it with a sponge. shrinkage shouldn't be a problem

I think I've seen something similar to this in the field I dig in. I'll have to go back out there this week and see. The color and shape just seems so familar to me, like I've come across parts but didnt know what it was so I didnt bother with it. It's pretty neat but I would have to wonder how many people used this before it was tossed out...
