The "tonic" indicates to me it may have been a medicinal or root beer or something other than beer, although it could have been fermented.  I am looking for a picture and info on now.

I should have figured I would find info at my favorite web site on historical bottle production.

There isn't a picture of your bottle but there is much info on beer bottles, tonic medicinal and tonic beer, which was probably just beer anyway.

As you learn it... write it down or pass it on. Our passion and hobby, if you will, is like the bird who dropped the berry on the isle below".

Read on... To me the research is a greater part of the enjoyment.

The only complete name with "Tonic Beer" in it, I can find, is:

Dr. BATES / TRADE MARK / NATIONAL / TONIC BEER / CENTENNIAL / 1876  - THIS / BOTTLE / NEVER / SOLD,  amber, round bottom

Keep digging and you will find an ending to this story. Keep me informed.

i had a horrible feeling it was some kind of  centenial bottle what i dont  get is  this dump...it does  not  go  down  past  a  foot..thats  when you get to that peanut buttery mass soil and  this shard and an  old spoon were 10 feet away   where there are countless 1900s smashed purple and  green milks....probably  from Frates..local landmark i fear the  worst  for this  dump= (
and this helps confirm my  fears  everything is  broken...but  i will not turn my back on it

the  dig  goes  on!  thanks  for all the help EP!

I wouldn't conclude that is a centennial bottle yet, but then i am not digging the dump and finding the things you are to date it. evey centennial celebration has to have an original event or item to celebrate.

Furthermore, even centennial bottles have value to those collectors. Sounds like you may want to dig deeper... but be careful, you don't know what the soil content is in that stuff you were describing. As I tell my kids, have fun but
be safe.

I find that most everything is smashed on the top few feet. You need to get down below the roots of any trees adjacent tot he dig. The 100-150 years has piled lots of stuff on top... plus, if any other scavenger/diggers were there, you are just going through thier remains. I hardly ever believe a dump is dug out... persistence pays off. every bad day is one day closer to a good one.

stone door knob

Nice!! Do you mean a ceramic door knob? White or brown? Those are really nice if the mechanics are still with them and not too worn. They are quite common but nice in era homes.

it almost looks like polished  stone..brown and  black  but  it could veryt well be ceramic..i have a  few crystal ones as well...but the ceramic one is rusted beyond compare.
