I have had a few that were less than memorable, but one that really sticks out. My buddy Rob and I dug a pit at an 1870s house. The fill was rock hard clay, and we had to bust it apart with a spud bar the whole way down. There were a few older shards sticking in the walls... good sign, right? Keep going, we don't quit! We finally get down to about five feet, and find a small 1950s junkyard down there. An old compressor motor...rusted black iron pipe scraps...a cluster of rusted nails and screws that weighed 50 bleeping pounds. We took all of that junk out, hoping it was just a late fill with goodies still below. 'Twas not to be, another foot of clay and the ugly bottom appeared without a single piece of glass . We got a hell of a workout and I think we invented a few new curse words, but that was all there was to be had from the worst pit I have ever dug. ~Jim
