Most advanced and beginner diggers have at least one digging experience they wish they could forget, or at least never attempt again. So, what is your worst digging experience?

I have had a few that were less than memorable, but one that really sticks out. My buddy Rob and I dug a pit at an 1870s house. The fill was rock hard clay, and we had to bust it apart with a spud bar the whole way down. There were a few older shards sticking in the walls... good sign, right? Keep going, we don't quit!

We finally get down to about five feet, and find a small 1950s junkyard down there. An old compressor motor...rusted black iron pipe scraps...a cluster of rusted nails and screws that weighed 50 bleeping pounds. We took all of that junk out, hoping it was just a late fill with goodies still below. 'Twas not to be, another foot of clay and the ugly bottom appeared without a single piece of glass .

We got a hell of a workout and I think we invented a few new curse words, but that was all there was to be had from the worst pit I have ever dug.  ~Jim

I've had a few bad digs with finger slices and such. One that stands out to me though was a late season attempt to dig. Me and my buddy Jim who's in his mid to late 60's were going down the bank to our digging hole. He was ahead of me and slid the last foot, jumped down the 2 or 3 feet to the bottom of the hole and did a full chest plant into a frozen mound of dirt, rusty metal and broken glass. I thought I was taking him to the hospital. Scared the crap out of me. He was up before I could get to him and shaking it off. Fortunately if he was hurt he wasn't showing any signs of it. He busted his glasses in his front pocket. I tried to get him to leave to make sure he was ok but he insisted that we try to dig. To our dismay we got to the dig a little too late in the season. The frost was too much, we gave up in about an hour and had nothing to show for our effort. I called him the next day and he assured me that he was fine. I won't do any more late season digs with him anymore. Its tough to see a good friend take a hard shot like that. I'm just glad he's fine. Swiz

Don't try this at home  kids
We were digging this 1870s 5x5x10 wood liner in  Kaakaatown a few years back,it was feb and it was colddd. We got the pit opened up and the bottles were flowin. When we got to the bottom Paul decided to dig in to the wall on the property line a little, when all of the sudden I hear him holler Rickkk get over here!!!  I ran over thinking the worst, and when I got there I thought paul was crushed buy the huge ball of concrete hanging in the pit attached to the chain link fence and a old concrete fence post. The fence and everything went into the pit,I had to pull Paul out.
The post weighed a ton so we couldn't pull it out,it was all busted up any way so we smashed it up with a sledge hammer to get it un hooked from the fence. It had to stay in the pit.
We then proceeded to think about how we were going to put the ball of concrete back so the fence would stay up,it was insanity to say the least.
Half of the fence was still in the hole and on the ground,we tossed a full 55 gallon drum in the pit and sat the corner piece on that and filled it in.It worked and to this day it is still solid.
Oh I for got to tell you about the old lady neighbor who thought a space ship came down and took her fence post. The concrete post was on her side. She said"where the hell did it go? did a space ship come and git it"We felt bad about it but if we told her what happened she probably wouldn't have believed us. So we did the next best thing.
One night we went back with a old post we found that was identical and put it back where her post stood.I have no idea if that lady is alive today but I am sure she thought the space ships brought her a new one

Morel of the story never dig to far  into the privy in the next yard.  I learned my lesson good!

Swizzle ! ! !   How could you say such a thing to a fellow bottle -ier and highly esteemed forum member when he entertains everyone with tales of his ridiculous escapades?!  He is forthcoming and nothing embarrasses him.  Thats what makes him special.  LMAO

It is what it is. Sick Rick is cool by me and I was born and raised to bust arse. I mean no harm I just have a slighty crude and twisted sense of humor sometimes.
