Here are some pics of shards of a bowl,Josh and I dug about a week ago.It would have stood about 6 inches tall, had 24 ribs, and rolled lip.I am fairly certain it was blown in Zanesville,Oh.,in the early 1800's.I have dug peices of the swirl bottles and other early peices of midwestern tableware from this era but never a swirled bowl.I wish we could have found all the peices but only found about 1/3 of it.Any thoughts?Brian in Kent ought to know something about it.Just thought everyone might enjoy seeing the wreckage.Doug

i saw a darker version of a swirled  glass for 9 dollars at a local antique  place kinda matches  your  bowl

im so so sorry u had  to find it  broken it  must have  truly been a masterpiece...but hey  you walked away with  some memories = )...someone  should  make a  fishtank full of  old glass instead of  coral  or  rocks...thatd be a cool piece for one

That's a spectacular find!  You are correct in ascribing Ohio (probably Zanesville) as the place of origin.  Probable date of manufacture would be 1820-1840.  Shallow pans from the region are relatively common but deep bowls such as yours are very rare.  Sorry that it is broken but still an important find!

Wow, you must have been into a really old privy. Kungfufighter is right. I hope you save all your best shards.

Thanks for the info guys!Brian, the privy it was dug from was from the 1850-70 era but to an older house. The bowl had a ton of basewear so it had been used alot before throwing it out.As far as keeping good shards,I try to keep shards to anything that appears rare or out of the ordinary.I try to keep anything from early glasshouses or marked peices from potters. Thanks again,Doug
