I know little or nothing of these things, so please bear with my query!! I recently found a beautiful lavender glass bottle with raised lettering on it reading
" JENNING S Flavoring Extract Co" . It is about 3 inches long, ractangular and narrow. On the bottom is a diamond with the numbers 982 inside, and what appears to be an 11 to the right of it. I cleaned it out, and it is VERY lovely, I don' t have a pic to post just yet, but if anyone knows anything about this, please give me a holler! Thanks a bunch! Mary-Lyn

Welcome to Antique-Bottles.Net !

From your description it sounds to me like it was Baking Powder. Here is a c1900 trade card for it...

PUT THAT BOTTLE IN A BRIGHT WINDOW WITH DIRECT SUNLIGHT, AND IT MIGHT GET EVEN MORE PURPLE OVER TIME !!. CLEAR GLASS MADE WITH MANGANESE, WILL TURN THIS COLOR WHEN EXPOSED TO DIRECT SUN. HIDE IT IN A DARK PLACE FOR A LONG TIME AND IT WILL LOSE COLOR.

Hi Mary-Lyn. If your bottle is from the U.S., the thin flat shape is typical of flavoring bottles that contained vanilla extract, lemon extract, etc. U.S. baking powder came in bottles with a rounder shape and larger mouth to make dispensing baking powder easier. From Roger' s trade card, it appears this company supplied both types of product. Any information on the back of your card Roger?

THANKS TO ALL WHO REPLIED!!

Medbottle... I think you' re right, it is too thin to be used for soda.

DiggerJeff, thanks. My bottle seems to be getting a bit more " purple-y" since I set it in a window that gets lots of sunlight.

Roger, that label is lovely! It would be neat to find one that went with mine like that one.

It had been a pain to clean out! We found it in our yard.. we just bought the property last winter. It was caked inside and out with dirt and sand. I am thrilled that I was able to get it so clean! I' ll try to post a picture some time soon.. (Just cause I am so pleased with it!)
Again, THANKS!!!
