Here's a little gem I just picked up on ebay... It's listed in several books, but always as a whiskey, which seems strange given the name: "Smokine"... According to the wife of a relative of the importer (Andersen), this bottle held liquid smoke... Now that kind of makes sense, especially since the cabin appears to resemble a smokehouse (according to Digger O'dell)... But why would a liquid smoke be imported?

Anyone?

It is a whiskey bottle. Is it an ABM or BIM?

PD...

It is BIM... Do you have any references that pin it down as a whiskey?

Thanks,

Ron

The Smokine bottles are Canadian, aren't they? At least I remember reading about one being found in western Canada.

Ronny old sock this is definitely a whiskey. I'd have to guess liquid smoke is perversion of this century. This bottle is in the $200 range, give or take. Three different embossings that I know of; Smokine - Alfred Andersen & Co Minneapolis - Winnipeg ~~ Smokine -Imported & Bottled By Alfred Andersen & Co and just Smokine. Two sizes that I know of are 5 1/4" and a 6 3/4"

Rickadoo...

I believe the spelling is "Andresen"... I know, I misspelled it too... Go Figger...

Anywhoo... Did you go check out what that Andresen relative had to say on Digger's web page? Thinkst thou she is but an agent of perversion???

Hi Ron ,
It is a Whiskey !
Several examples are listed as selling thru the big name public auction houses as a Whiskey.
Cool looking cabin ! And they sell fairly cheap ( 125.00 - 200.00 range) considering that they are a cabin shaped figural Whiskey.

I still say: "That dog don't hunt!"...

I tracked down an email address for Lori A. Lilja, the woman who wrote to Digger O'dell saying her husband was a descendant of Alfred Andresen, the importer of Smokine... I did a web search and eventually landed on a geneology site with a message board... However, the email address posted there for Lori was non-functional... I've posted a message there asking if anyone knows her new address...so we'll see what turns up...

She stated in her post that Andresen came here from Germany, altho he's obviously Scandinavian... I feel we're close to a solution here... I'm itchy all over...

Dang I hate being wrong!! I wrote an email to Steve Ketchem a knowledgeable bottle collector specializing in whiskeys. This is his reply concerning your cabin;

HI Rich,

Give the lady a cigar. Alfred Andresen did in fact package a meat
smoking liquid in these bottles. Someone decided it would be better
to sell these at auction and elsewhere as whiskey bottles rather than
as food bottles, and the misinformation has stuck. I do not know of
a web site for this info, but it is well documented in our Minnesota
bottle book. Also, back about 20 years ago a very good article about
old Alfred was written by Minnesota collector Boyd Beccue and
published in the Federation Journal. Send me an address and I will
get copies of this info to you. I would welcome the chance to help
clear the air on this one. Now, if we could just get folks to stop
dating bottles by how many fractons of an inch a seam goes up the
neck of a bottle!
Steve

If anyone's interested I'll forward him my address and get the info.
Rich.

You learn something new everyday !
I had always heard that it was a whiskey , and I'm not really to knowledgable with these.
But , now the name Smokine makes sense , and the value makes more sense also !
Thanks for sharing !

That is what's great about these internet forums, i had only seen Smokine cabin listed as a whiskey. Research has been made alot easier I guess with the internet.
Oh ya, btw that is a nice bottle you got Ronny.

Hi Everyone-
Well I love all the attention that my husbands Great Grandfather has created. Yes it is a smokine bottle and I have a copy of his catalog from 1904 that lists it. He actually had many different sizes including a brown and tan moonshine type jug that also held the smokine. We have been collecting his items over the past 8 years & I am also collecting any information anyone may have so if you have any article or any info I would greatly apreciate it. You can e-mail me at jlilja@paulbunyan.net. Becasue of the weird e-mail address many times e-mails do not go through because systems think it is a spam address. Oh well..price I pay for living in northern Minnesota! I too collect antique bottles but mostly for show in my overly antique filled house! If anyone needs more information or would like a copy of the catalog with the bottles listed, please let me know. If anyone has Alfred Andresen items for sale...please let me know!!!
Thanks guys
Lil
