The history and dating of Codd bottles are covered on my Historic Bottle Website on the "Soda & Mineral Water Bottles" typology (i.e., what a bottle was used for) page at this link:

http://www.sha.org/bottle/soda.htm#Codd Style

The bottles were primarily used for mineral water or soda though I believe some were used for beer too. In any event, carbonated products were all that bottle/closure type could be used for since the carbonation kept the marble in place until one opened it by pushing down. No carbonation = no seal.

Hope that helps! Bill

Yes, they are worth holding on to.  Codds with oddities like blue marbles are worth more,  check it out on e-bay;
Just type in Codd bottles in the search box when you get there.
