I've been slowly cleaning my 1st collection of old bottles my son and I unearthed last week (http://www.antique-bottles.net/forum/site-of-my-first-dig/m-461165/tm.htm)

I put together an album of my lousy attempt of capturing all the embossings here: http://s941.photobucket.com/albums/ad252/ilyaz73/Old%20bottles%202/?start=all

It looks like a few of these bottles are nothing special but I am wondering if there is a gem or two in this stack. Do you see any that catch your eye?

By the way, even though it's not glass, can someone give me an idea what this canister is and what it's made of: http://i941.photobucket.com/albums/ad252/ilyaz73/Old%20bottles%202/IMG_2508.jpg and http://i941.photobucket.com/albums/ad252/ilyaz73/Old%20bottles%202/IMG_2511.jpg
Is this copper? Zinc? Some sort of medical container? Or simply a flask?

I am trying to figure out what to do with them at this point. I am totally new to the whole bottle collecting business and will be trying to learn as much about these bottles as I can (time permitting). But I also have to convince my wife that this box of bottles is not "junk" that should go to the recycling container. So any help "quickly triaging" this collection will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you much!

My guess is brass or copper. The rust is incidental to where it was found.
You won't hurt it by making a scape so go for it.
Unless you scrape off the letters such as U.S.G or something.

Most looks 30s and newer. The Citrate of Magnesia looks a bit older in picture 21. The soda looks promising in picture 41. The one in picture 15 looks like it might have had an acl at one point. The Citrate of Magnesia looks older to me, and would keep me digging.

So far I could not find any text written or stamped on it. I was thinking of removing the oxidation but this might end up doing more harm than good. Maybe I'll just clean off the steel/iron rust and leave the rest alone.

Bryan, thanks much for the info. I do want to revisit the place but it's a very steep creek bank that had collapsed --  exposing the bottles in the process -- and so much additional digging might cause another cave in. So I am thinking of waiting until after the spring melt -- if we get any considerable snow this winter -- or until after some really heavy rains.

Me too mr fred. The question by me is if it's BSA, CSA, USA or other.

Sorry I missed the album.
http://s941.photobucket.com/albums/ad252/ilyaz73/Old%20bottles%202/?start=all
I see some late stuff like a Michelob beer and a ketchup I remember using myself in the 70's or just prior. I don't want to give away my age.
I don't think an acid bath will hurt the canteen so I'd give it a try.
I see Mellens food and the pectin bottle and a few other common food bottles as well but it looks like a place to just dig a little deeper.
Good luck and most of all have fun digging.

I don't think the object you'll calling a canteen is actually one. I looks like copper from the pics you posted. The holes in the neck bother me as being a canteen, and small. If you want to clean it try some nitric acid, but with the verdigris once removed it will be pitted.

ya, my first guess is its a brass bed warmer. The holes in neck would be for handle attachment.

DO NOT US MURIATIC ACID ON THAT! COPPER, BRASS, ETC WILL DISSOLVE QUITE WELL IN IT.

I'd be all over that dump site. Then again it can be dangerous but I've been known to take some daring chances.

I see a bridge in the back ground. Classic spot for a dump site. Might find some good milk bottles in there.

Plan out your attack and be safe!
