Made from a ladies belt buckle. The hook in the center is a little bent. It had a little dangle on the hook that was held in place by the blouse after it was pined on. The dangle could be changed the to make brooch was versatile. Very commom in the second half of the 1800s.

Polish it up and it will look new again. The back ground may not have been plated. Brass jewelry was alot more popular than most folks think. The poorer classes had to fend for themselves as far as jewelry went back then.

hi warren,  thanks for the information.  i still not sure how it was used for a belt buckle,  i can't evision the dangle thing.   i know the pin has to rest on the hook in order to latch. thanks again,   rhona

Look at the side view. The bar sticking out from the end to form the hook is the tounge of the buckle. The hook end was looped back on itself to form a circle. It would wrap around a bar that went from side to side. Look at you hubbies belt buckle.

I thought it was a broach and the hook was for a fresh flower! Belt buckle pinned seems a stretch.  I think I have one I'll look

Found it!
This is the one I found
the metal part would be hinged if it was meant to move back and forth, otherwise it would snap I'm sure.

Yep, yours is a brooch and looks like about 1920 or so but Rhona's brooch/buckle is late 1800s and the findings on the back (pin, hinge and catch) are 20th century add ons. Take it from a retired jeweler who has worked on hundreds of pieces of antique jewelry. I now only do jewelry that is turned down buy jewelry shops like beyond repair items. I gotta stay sharp ya know.

Warren, I have a very beat up mens 18 karat gold ring that I want to get repaired. It is missing the stone, and im thinking about just putting something fake in it. I will try and get a picture up and have your thoughts on the piece.

OK Warren, here is is. Don;t say I never said it was "beat up". Came out of a 1950s pit that I dug a few years back when I was just getting started. I didnt think it would be real gold, and if it was, I figured it would be crappy quality, but I am told its 18 karat. Dont know if thats true. Looking at the marking, it looks like it says 10K on the inside...lol.

Ok sash pin but this perticular one resimbles a small belt buckle and I have never seen a brass and silver sash pin. I would hang onto it Rhona. Pree 1900 costume jewelry in some cases is worth than precious metal jewelry and I have been working on jewelry for a very long time. I have seen silver and gold plated pins but they were usually made around 1910 until about 1930.

Hey Kyle, It will say 18k on the inside of the band if it is. If it says 10k then it is 10k unless it came from Mexico then it is 6k maybe no matter what it says.

It is not all that bad. I have repaired alot worse and usually the client just couldn't imagine how it got skwished under that car tire. Usually they claim that they put it on the dresser and when the came back.....walah.... it was mutilated. Don't know why they can't just tell you "I lost it and found it when I ran over it".

If you want it back like new email me.
