Sunday morning I found this broken top half of a local pint milk and almost did a jig in the woods!  It doesn't look like much yet on the local history side I was really excited.  There are three milk bottles from Delta, two are easy to get examples of, but this EDDIE E. HUGHES / FAIRVIEW DAIRY is extremely rare with only one intact pint and quart known with minor dings.  There is one other broken one known and now this one. These are about ten years older than the other two milks and everyone I've seen are SCA.  I've dug lots of milks but only pieces of SCA's, not even a slick one.  When I picked this one up and turned it over I couldn't believe it was a Hughes!  I've dreamed about finding a piece of one of these, maybe I shoulda dreamed about finding a whole one!  Oh well, still a great chunk of local history and a place holder!

Ouch. At least it goes to show that there are a few out there to be found. I always say "They couldn't have smashed them all!". I recently dug a rare 1914 George W. Sheary Hardware milk bottle from Lewistown, of course with the bottom knocked out . A short while later, I found a pint milk bottle base...Perfect fit! Now, it's complete, although with a glued-in bottom and nasty spider crack on the back, but it doesn't look too bad on the shelf. ~Jim

Nice find sir! Granted, it is far from complete, but it is still a worthy specimen and a fine conversation piece. When a bottle is of such obscene rarity even the discovery of shards is a rewarding experience. You hit the nail on the head regarding it being a great chunk of local history, which is more important than the bottles themselves, though the tangibility of it via a bottle certainly helps.

I found 2 complete unlisted milks which were the 1st generation bottles of a prolific local dairy, and they are darn cool, but my favorite milk is a half pint with the bottom knocked out, from a dairy never known to have used  embossed bottles until I dug one up, as it was a very small operation and went out of business in about 1912 or so. Sure, it's not pretty superficially, but its historical vibrancy far outweighs the rough edges. I hope to find a complete one, and hope you one day find a set of Hughes bottles, but regardless we can still access the same history when we touch the glass, broken or not.

G'luck!

Thanks guys and congrats on your finds, especially finding something unknown, that adds to the historical record, that's cool!  I look for local artifacts of all kinds, even if it is just pieces and dream about finding those bottles listed in the local books as " no bottles are known at this time"!!!

Most of the embossed milks from the San Jose area hail from the 1930s.
I dug an old ranch dump along a creek that had numerous milks, including many broken
shards of local milks -- but I never kept any of these shards for reference. The majority
of intact milks were from dairies in Palo Alto. Funny that all these milk bottles were returnable for a 5 cent deposit and yet were tossed out.  Back then a nickel was worth something too.

One of my favorite milk bottle finds, I know nothing of rarity/value, but was lucky enough to come up with about 48 pint and 1/2 pint painted milks in immaculate condition in building that was about to be demolished.  Most are from rural Va and NC, some addorned with Model Ts/other cool 20s/30s images if anyone cares to see 'em.
