Bought this at an antique store. The sales person told me it was from the 1800's, handmade, used for men's cologne. I cannot see any molding lines in it. There appears to be a faint pontil i think but not sure. you can see where someone hand drew the design and then painted that drawing...any idea how old it is? valuable or not?

Looks like from India and modern, but not completely valueless.

what does the bottom look like? Your photo is a bit small so its hard to examine it well.

Hello Laynette,

Welcome to the A-BN and thanks for bringing that bottle.

If you want us to try and figure that guy out. please do nice close up photos, preferably in natural light, of the base, the lip, and stopper, and the interesting paint work.

Forget about it being any kind of Men's Cologne. I'm a guy, from a long line of guys, and there's not one of us that would have used that. I'm inclined to go with Mr. cyberdigger's estimation. The stopper looks like a Lotus Flower to me.

Ive never heard an official name for those. Some people call them colognes, dresser bottles, toilet bottles.
I would think women used them not men. Probably put toilet water or florida water in them.
They were apparently imported from Europe and used sometime in the early 20th century.
They are fairly common in general but there are a lot of different variations and some styles/colors are harder to find than others.
Not a huge value on them. Its good it has original stopper, not very good without that.
Thats my impression for what its worth.

would be interesting to see some original ads for them.

this one my be quite later, without the pontil and all so i do agree this one is later. that is quite a fancy stopper if it is old.

You know I actually wonder if these were ever made to be used. Or just made as decorative items? They are late as in post 1880s manufacture. I have dug quite a few of them broken that had a perfect hole in the bottom caused when the pontil was removed not caused by post manufacture damage so these never could have held any liquid. Also I have noticed that quite a few of them with stoppers the stoppers fit quite loosely and would alloy any contents to dry up quickly. Also they tend to be super thin and would be quite easily broken if they were actually handled on a regular basis. And honestly if you look at the size they are quite large for cologne or perfume.

John Pastor can tell you.
Nic, you should show yours to him at the Grand Rapids show in February.

I'm pretty sure at least some of them were used.
The one laynetterai posted appears to have a mating mark on the stopper that would be used to match the stopper to bottle when they were ground. They wouldnt go to the trouble of precision grinding the stopper if it wasnt meant to hold anything.
My impression was they were sold empty and users would fill them with florida water, cologne , or whatever they wanted.
A tough thing to prove though.
I have seen dozens of them and I have never seen one with a hole in the bottom like you describe. They almost always are blown with a pontil scar. Could the ones you dug be damaged ones? What age context have you dug them in?
