I took the dogs out today to an old abandoned farm I frequent.  I've dug, searched, detected and rummaged through this place again and again, but just never turned much up.  The front of the house has fallen off, leaving a gaping hole, which I often peer into from time to time to see if I can see any bottles falling out of holes in the ceiling and walls...(thats going to happen), well today was no different.  I peeped in and looked around to no avail.  Then I notice a round copper disk sitting on the edge of the sill plate, out in the open.  I almost left it thinking it was an electrical knock out like I usually find.  But being curious I picked up and put it in my pocket.  Getting home I took another look before tossing it and saw the letters CONN under the grime!  I took a very close look and made out it was coin.  It is very worn, but I can just make out the stamping on it enough to look up what it is, a Connecticut colonial coin!  No sh*t!  here is a pic of a similar coin, I dont think whats left of mine would come out in a picture...

no, not yet, its covered in grime on the date part.  All I can make out is that the bust faces left, and CONNE, and on the reverse I can see the arm extended and the seated liberty, but not all of it... it is worn bad... I dropped it in vinegar to get some grime off...

Tigue:

What you found was a Post-Colonial "Connecticut Copper" of which over 300 die varieties exist. They were minted from 1785 through 1788 and were circulated widely owing to the fact that many such coppers found are well-worn. In its present condition, good/left-facing bust, the following valuations apply: 1785 ($100); 1786 ($35); 1787 ($25); 1788 ($25).

Go easy on cleaning as it will devalue coin.

The next logical step is to secure permission from the property owner and then undertake a thorough exploration of the grounds with a metal detector. I suspect you'll find more period coins.

Hey Matt,
Lucky find!  Get back there with a metal detector and look for more!!
Its heartbreaking to find them in that bad of shape though, I've got a George III and a 1722 Rosa Americana, same story. You can just see enough to tell what they are.

the house is part of an exclusive access I have, it along with a few others (including the one I found all the bottles under the barn at) are slated for condos, I have free roam of the property... gonna do some detecting I think!

No date visible, just enough to make out what it is... and hardly that, I dont think I'll be able to place it any better then as a connecticut copper!  I still like it... cant believe it was just sitting there...

Kewl surface find!!!  Also get a borescope and check all cavities before that place gets razed.

detect as soon as possible. you never know when they will start building or have 2nd thoughts about revoking permission. also, detect again after they scrape top layer of dirt off. Its an old site, hit it as often as possible before everything is buried under condo history.
