According to Soda and Beer Bottle Closures 1850 - 1910 by David Graci, the first one was patented by Edwin L. Lloyd on August 25, 1885 and the second is by Frederick B. Thatcher March 3, 1885. I will say though that in my searches for other things I've seen a lot of odd closure patents. That leads me to believe there were hundreds, maybe thousands of closures that just never made it. I wish I had saved every link or pdf but I don't have the space on my hard drive for everything.
