Same as any digging you need to do a little research to find an area where there was an old homestead or camp etc, I use a 7 mm wetsuit also use old gum bootd or good wetsuit boots as well as good gloves this is more for protection from submerged logs and broken glass rather than warmth. I have a special creek probe which is about 6 foot long and one end is bent over in a small hook, then you just jump in and walk along the bed of the creek, probe as deep into the mud on the bottom as you can, after a while you will learn the different sounds that glass and rocks make.
If you are lucky you will find good bottles on the surface of the creek bed, if not you will find bottles way down deep in the mud. You use the hook on the end of the probe to help you pull them out.
It is difficult at first but if you stick it out there are lots of good bottles to be found.
Here I have a few good creek digging stories

Good luck
Chris

Hmm, there will be bottles in your creek for sure diggerjeff, let us know what you find. one hint use gum boots as oz-riley mentioned and use your feet to get the bottles out of the mud/sand on the bottom.

WHEN DOING A CREEK DIG, DO YOU FIND THAT THE BOTTLES ARE CONCENTRATED IN CERTIAN PLACES OR ARE THEY STRUNG OUT OVER A DISTANCE DOWN STREAM FROM A CERTIAN POINT ? DID THEY TEND TO DRIFT FOR A WHILE FROM THE POINT THEY WERE TOSSED IN?

Hey Jeff,
I took this photo a while ago and forgot to post it here for you.
This is a pic of the hook end of the creek probe I use, some other diggers use a probe that is similar to a land probe but I have found this the best and easiest to use.
Nothing to special, just a six foot peice of spring steel with a hook on one end.

THANKS FOR TAKING THE PHOTO .. I MADE A PROBE A WEEK AGO AND HERE IS WHAT I CAME UP WITH. I BENT THE END AROUND TO GRAB THE NECK OF BEER AND SODA BOTTLES AND FLARED THE TIP TO GET INTO THE NECKS OF OTHER KINDS OF BOTTLES AND JARS. I HAVENT USED IT IN THE CREEK YET . IT IS FLOODED BADLEY RIGHT NOW,IT IS THE RAINY SEASON HERE. BUT I TESTED IT ON A FEW I BURIED IN MUD . I THINK IT WILL WORK WELL FOR ME . IF IT DOSENT I WILL CUT IT TO LOOK LIKE YOURS.
THANKS FOR YOUR ADVISE
JEFF

hi diggerjeff,
be very carefull with that hook that you don' t pull the tops off the bottles you find.
it' s easy to scratch and even break bottles in mud, the probe that Chris uses is probably the safest for the bottles.
